How often do you upgrade monitors?

I went from a 20" Samsung and a 22" Westinghouse, both 1680x1050 LCD widescreens, to a pair of 26" KDS widescreens 1920x1200.

I stopped upgrading once I got IPS monitors.

I might upgrade again when high-DPI displays become affordable.

I've had my monito samsung 793MB (I think) for over 5 years. At the bottom of the screen the backlighting is starting to show through a little bit. It's annoying on bright colours.

Kind of applicable to this thread, what are some of the better 16x10 ratio monitors out there. I don't like the look of 16x9, too long and flat. I hear that 16x10 are becoming a little harder to find because 16x9 is becoming standard. I'm thinking of upgrading now before 16x10 become a special order type thing. I'm looking for something around 24" 1920x1200.

Just curious.. i have an old 19" and was looking into getting a new one...

I don't upgrade monitors... I add monitors

(dual screens >>>>> single screen, triple screen >> dual screens, quad screen > triple screen)

* > means how much more performance increase

There are 27" S-IPS 2560x1440 monitors on ebay < $350 (might not have perfect screens / no dead pixels / best features)

if i didn't have my 2 dell eIPS 1680x1050 (and a spare 1680x1050 TN), i'd get another one of those

Still using my old ViewSonic VX-900 (19-in) LCD. Am considering upgrading to a 23-in LED - but am in no hurry. 🙂

When they stop serving their purpose for general everyday document reading, as long as i have a monitor hooked in DVI, that gives me sharp text without Eye stain... Till it dies. For gaming I have a couple LG 19s with F-engine, and 2ms response. Do not see the need to upgrade till they die. In all reality there really hasn't been enough of a advancement in monitor technology to warrant a new one in my eye.

I've just upgraded to a Korean 2560x1440 27" IPS monitor and absolutely loving it. Before that I was using a 17' Dell.

I'm using a 1920x1200 24" IPS display I bought in 2005. It's pretty much the best investment I have ever made in computer hardware. I just got an Ergotron arm for it, should have done that years ago.

I could pick up a 1440p screen but only if I got a great deal on one. What would get me to drop serious money again is 1440p-or-better with 120Hz.

I had my 19in Trinitron from 2003-2009, then upgraded to a 27in Dell (just itching to upgrade to something current really).

Fast forward nearly 3 years later, I saw an irresistible deal on a Dell 3011 and jumped on it (impulse buy really but it was worth it IMO).

p.s. I'm still using the Trinitron as secondary display on my HTPC.

Catleap?

I want to get one myself, but I didn't see a matte screen option.

reasons I upgraded in the last 20 odd years.

Monitor started fading (CRT)
monitor died (CRT Arcing)
Going dual (really getting a second, not replacing the first. That one when into secondary mode)
Given a monitor (21" crt)
went LCD (space / weight) (second hand LCD units / good price)
GPU was pushing a constant 120+ FPS on a 60Hz limit screen. (27" upgrade)

Every five years or so. Right now I have an HP w2207 from 2007, which is 22" and 1680x1050. I'm looking for a real upgrade, so I'll save up this year for a Dell U2412M so I can gain an IPS panel, matte coating, a higher resolution, and a bigger screen size.

Going on about 9 years on my dell 2001FP. Going to upgrade only because I have a 100 dollar gift card after I bought the wife a laptop. Gonna go with the U2412M...extra 4 inches + IPS. Should be a great upgrade that will hold me over for another 8-10 years barring OLED taking off and becoming affordable.

About every 3-4 years it seems...

My next upgrade will be a 120hz monitor once they become a little bit more common and affordable.

Monitors are expensive. About a year ago I went from a 19-inch Acer to a 27-inch Asus, and almost crapped myself. When I enter bachelorhood this summer when my fiancee moves to Florida, I'll be hooking up the living room 46-inch Sharp as my primary and using the Asus as a secondary.

Can't wait for the day, though, when I can set up three 30-inch IPS and rock an eyefinity setup.

I upgrade my computer quite often. My monitor not so much.

1990 - Crappy interlacted 640x480 monitor that came with my IBM 486 SX25
1994 - Sceptre 15" running 800x600 (not a bad monitor actually)
1998 - Illyama Visionmaster 17 Pro (another good one for the day)
2004 - Dell 2001FP (still using it)
