Or are these like $100 shirts?
I've never dry cleaned in my life, I didn't know they made clothes anymore that required it.
i work in a dry cleaning plant, doing the actual cleaning and spot removal (as well as equipment maintenance) and *most* clothes dont *need* dry cleaning; at all.
however, its a convenience, and an expensive one. i have all my clothes cleaned there, since its my dads place and its free for me, otherwise the only thing id get done there ever would be the occassional dress shirt.
prices are high because the costs of the work are high, $2 a shirt, almost $4 for a golf shirt, $4.50 for drycleaned pants, $5.00 for starched pants, its not cheap. you can go the discount cleaner route, which usually doesnt include spot removal, or they dont take the time to press and finish off garments as well as a higher end cleaners.
some people find it a requirement to look their best, but youd be surprised how many t shirts (again, at almost $4 a pop) come in, or nasty old workpants someone wants to have a crease in for the hell of it, or some old dress with stains that are beyond impossible to remove someone would pay $9 to have cleaned...some people are nuts.
however, even alot of stuff that says "dry clean only" ... well, it can be washed, if you know how to handle some of it. polyester, cotton, linen....even alot of silks can be hand-washed or "wet cleaned" which is usually a soak and a gentle rinse. in fact, some cleaners are doing a majority of their cleaning as wet-cleaning, and using drycleaning only when they have to.
