How often do you do computer maintaince on your computer?

I'm in the process of deleting a bunch of crap that I no longer use.

Lots of stuff has acumulated in the past 2-3 years on here.

I'm saving only what's vital, trashing all the rest.

I run ccleaner, spyware blaster and spybot s&D about once a month.

As far as purging files, I hardly ever do it because storage is so cheap nowadays. Since I'm no longer in school, all that I really have on my computer is bookmarks, photographs, and music.

I also try not to install any more software than I need.

I understand your philosophy.

Fortunately (or unfortunately) I need to reinstall fedora core on here so keeping the data there is not an option

I never do "regular" maintenance per se: I don't ever run antivirus or anti-spyware, I hardly uninstall software and I never defrag.

Why?

I never run executables or stuff from sites that I do not trust.
I have latest windows patches.
I keep browser updates.
I don't go to sites that I don't trust in general--stick to mainstream stuff and research-oriented.
I don't install software that I won't need.
I don't put lots of large files on my drive to fill it up and then later remove them.

I have few tools, but they are ones that I know I will use again and again. I very very rarely go download stuff to try it out then uninstall it. Most of my computer use is: Email, IM, web, lots of programming, typing documents and plenty of research.

I typically rarely have more than say 500 MB of user content on my drives (beyond the OS and tools).

I DO regularly perform "maintenace" on my inbox, desktop (i tend to leave lots of post-it style .txt files on there), my bookmarks and my documents folders. I find that things accumulate often in those 😉

While I could perhaps stand to defrag once in awhile, the performance increase has always been negligible in my experience.

I run antivirus and spyware scans every night... they never come up with anything, but it gives me peace of mind 😉

I defrag once every 6 months or so.

I never clean out old files until I actually need to... someday I really need to buckle down and try to sort through all the files I have multiple copies of, though.

I agree with you 100%. That's how I run my machine. I run no anti-virus as well they slow down everything by scanning every freaking file that even twitches. I have been virus free since MS Blaster and my computer runs smooth. Although I do defrag every once in a while.

I only do it when I need to. Im pretty good at keeping crap out of my computer, but when the occasional bad thing comes along Ill clean it off. I really could use a nice day to sit down and clear out files, I have so much crap there accumulated over the years.

I usually only go through and clean out stuff when my main drive is getting full. I defrag once every 8+ months. I usually never have to run spyware scanners as I rarely get any, and my virus scanner scans nightly.

i try to keep my server organized...but it gets hard when 1tb of piled up files..any time i get bored i try to do some reorganizing, but there isnt enough space....so ill buy another HD, then fill it up, forgetting about organizing...then i'm bored again and want to organize...the cycle repeats itself

I reimage at least every year or so and reload everything from scratch. I have a base image with the standard stuff that I restore from and then just install the stuff as I go.

Rarely, every 4 months or so. I hate doing it but these random freezes because the heatsink is not on very tight is pissing me off. So I will have to fix it eventually.
