How often do you do a clean install?

A friend of mine seems to do it once every two weeks or so. I've had this installation of XP running since last September, but it's starting to seem a little sluggish. I know an XP 1900+ (o/c 1600) runs faster than this!

If your running XP a quick way to see if you need to format is create a new user account... login to it if it is still sluggish even with most of your usuall start up sh!t not there... format c:

I usually do one every quarter... but you may just want try defragging first.

Also... wasn't the release date for XP in October? 😉 *cough* Corporate Edition *cough*

I never reformat. I've been running my current Windows 2000 setup since I upgraded my machine in September without any noticeable loss in speed. I use Norton Utilities, Cleansweep and Regclean to keep everything running like new.

I make a standard built and ghost the final and everything after it gets nuke and i do it maybe once a month.. if i dont install new program, i never do... i can't stand how some people install 500 program and expect the computer to run as fast as a new system

That's why you're not noticing a slow down, Norton was killing you 'puter before 🙂

Only when I install a new motherboard ,I use a good registry cleaner and it does a good job of keeping everything going,my Win98 OS PC is over year old without a clean install,my current rig is new so only 10 weeks or so,but I`ve no intention of reformating unless I upgrade or the OS gets screwed beyond repair.

🙂

Only if you do a low-level format. If you quick format, it won't hurt it.

I have a friend who has had Win98 running without formatting for 4 years now... I do regular maintanace on it for him.... but it is dieing in the ass now. I have told him to save all of his stuff and reformat... but he doesn't want to... so he lives with it.
As for me... I am running Win2K and I am hoping that with good house keeping I can keep it going for at least 12 months before having to format the drive. Then I may upgrade again! 😀

FWIW - I built my first comp in December '98 and have yet to do a clean install. I've changed my HD twice (Seagate 6.4g->WD 10.0g->WD 13.6g), my motherboard twice (BH6->BM6->6163pro), my vid card three times (I740->V2->V3->GF2), numerous modems, same sound card (Aureal Vortex 1), coupla CDROMs. I've installed MS's updates and regularly clean the system using Tweak3D's Cleanup Guide. So far my system is doing OK. I'm soon to change to a Soyo AV40 and a P4-1.5 (with the same HD). We'll see what happens.

Bulk-You sound like my old man and he is constantly bitching about his computer locking up and crashing.....I gave up on him 😉

There is no reason to format habitualy with win2k/XP, only 9x OS's seem to need it. Otherwise, your wasting your time

Use to reinstall Win95 and 98 when memory leaks occur anywhere from 6 to 15 months from installation. NT 4, Win2K and XP only gets only installed once unless a major hardware changes are done. These frequent reinstalls are a waste of time in my opinion.

it makes me feel nice 🙂

plus, my g/f likes to make a mess installing games and whatnot. i dont know how many times i tell her to just change "c:\Program Files\<game name>" to E: but the same path. just change the "C" to "E". but she manages to install games directly into E: and E:\Program Files and whatnot. plus i install things every once in a while, and sh!t just accumulates.

oh, and dont forget drivers. those via 4in1's SUCK ASS and those plus some crappy detonators have done a great job of making my "stable" win2k installation very UN stable. needless to say my next build will NOT have via in it, and only possibly an nvidia card. i dont really game anyways, and matrox's drivers are great, even in linux 🙂

also its a good time to do some general "spring cleaning", delete un needed stuff, and what not
