How often do you completely beat a game?

I thinking about this last night while playing No More Heroes but I almost never completely beat games. I usually beat the main parts but I rarely unlock everything in a game. At a certain point I give up on collecting all the extra bits and just want to beat the thing. I think I have about 72 stars in Mario galaxy and probably won't ever get to 120 nevermind all 242. I the closest I came to unlocking everything in a game was Final Fantasy 7. Just about the only thing I didn't beat in that game was the emerald or ruby monster (whichever one was harder). So back to my original question: How often do you completely beat a game and/or how close do you usually get to completely beating it?

I get obsessive over RPGs and usually complete everything (over 200 hours into FF7, maybe 300-400 hours into combined playthroughs of FFX, 200 or so hours into a 100% completion of FFX-2). Also in FPSes, I explore a lot and leave no stone unturned. So normally, I beat everything...

I never fully complete a game. I don't have the attention span.

I've yet to score that allusive 1000 gamerscore on any 360 titles, either.

Very rarely. I did it in Final Fantasy III, MegaMan X, Mario 64, and Eternal Darkness. Can't think of any others off the top of my head. I'm sure I have in some of the simpler games I've owned.

I try to do as much as I can, but usually I end up getting tired of the game before I do absolutely everything. Most of the extra stuff isn't fun anyways (like collecting random objects), which kind of defeats the purpose.

Rarely if ever. I got 120 stars on SMG, but only b/c I wanted to see all the planets + do all the tasks. Doing the same thing over again with Luigi seems stupid.

rarely. I typically get halfway in many games, due to playing a few at the same time, and rarely get around to playing games I've put down for awhile... of which I'm pretty much guaranteed.

Call of Duty 4 had the shortest period of me not playing it, and I got to enjoy beating it. I was happy. 🙂

Depends on how fun the game is. Unlocked everything in Soul Caliber 2, Got 120 stars in mario galaxy, 100% in all 3 metroid primes, and 1000 points on oblivion (70 hours or so). I tried my hardest, but I just can not break 940 points in COD4. Its just not worth the frustration to get those last 60 points.

Cant wait for smash bros.

Beat MGS2 with most of the dogtags, KH1/KH2 completely, Super Mario 64, Zelda Majora's Mask, Zelda OoT, Zelda TP (Still working on some heart pieces). That's all that comes to mind so far.

Edit: Megaman X, Megaman X3, Megaman X4, Megaman X5, Megaman X6, Megaman X8

depends on the game honestly, but with achievements i'll tend to do more.

however the game i beat the crap out of last year was ratchet and clank for ps3. i maxed out every weapon and got all of the gold bolts. i played through it atleast 5 times to do this.

Rarely. I did it on SSBM, Super Mario 64, FFX, FFVII *excluding the final boss LMAO but I'm sure he would have been a cinch*, Shadow of the Colossus, Zelda OoT, DMC3, which is only a fraction of the games I've played. I usually am pretty universally thorough, however.

Always. No exceptions.

This lead to quite a bit of trouble, initially. My backlog was pretty out of hand for a while there but I caught up and vowed never again. The new rule is now one game in progress per console. The game has to be finished before I buy a new one.

Almost never. I'm more of a one-and-done kind of guy. There are only a small handful of games that I would bother trying to completely finish. So many games have lots of medals, awards, and unlockables these days and I rarely bother chasing those.

Did you REALLY beat MegaMan X completely? I'm talkin Hadoken here, not just the hearts/energy tanks.

Never. I just finished Mass Effect having completed the vast majority of the game, and only have 535 of 1000. But there are so many achievements that require complete playthroughs (150 kills on a weapon, character allies, difficulty modes, special abilities, etc.) I'm on the second playthrough already, but even then I doubt I'll come anywhere near the 1000.

I love the game though.

Hehe... my goal is to beat CoD4 completely... including unlocking everything in the multiplayer (but not doing prestige). However, I rarely beat games 100% as some of them tend to get old too quickly.... or they get too frustrating to beat on the highest difficulty. I'm more about enjoying games. I enjoy the hell out of playing CoD4 online, so finishing all the little things is FUN. However, I'm not sure that i'll ever get around to getting 1000/1000 because I'm not sure that I want to be doing everything on Vet... I'll most likely be banging my head against a wall.

I still have a bunch of used games that I picked up cheep over xmas that I want to play. Got GRAW 1 and 2, R6:Vegas, Kameo, Viva Pinata (which is so damn addicting). I am going to force myself not to buy anything for a while... unless it's a great MP online game (for either 360 or PS3). I simply have too much stuff to play.

Pretty much never these days. The problem is that some of those "collect 'em all!" extras are time-consuming grinding. I have nothing against that in particular, and actually appreciate it being there for the gamers who don't buy many games. But: I have way more money than time, and I'd prefer to get 90% out of a title and spend less time, rather than get 100% out of the title and spend more time. As someone else mentioned, Mass Effect can be a clear example - to get all the achievements, you'd have to finish the game at least three or four times. That's just too much time for maybe 5% more fun. Ditto for Assassin's Creed and the flag-collecting - I'm just not going to be doing that.

Seeing that 1000/1000 achievement score is ego-boosting, but it's just a fact of my schedule that I won't see it too often.

hah damn i forgot about that haduken! my friend and I did that WWAAYY back when that game was the hot stuff on SNES.

certain games I will try to fully finish it. Like an RPG or something.

I remember getting every star in Mario 64, and getting everything in FF7. I don't have as much time now that I am our of college so I don't really do that anymore. But if the right RPG came along, I'd probably do it again, maybe FF13 when it comes out.

Most of the missions on vet are doable., fun even. There are really just three truly absurd parts.

The sniper mission where you had to hold off while the choppers came and rescued you was insanely hard - it took me 20-30 tries just to make a dent in it, and eventually had to use an exploit just to last long enough, and even then, it was no walk in the park.

Theres a part of "no fighting in the war room", where you go into that little hallway where theres two adjacent hallways, and you'll just get blasted from both sides - when you finally manage to make your way to one hallway, youll have to push through a series of hallways where they will just be waiting for you, and its pretty much damn near impossible to beat without some measure of luck, perfect reflexes and memorization.

And the final bonus mission, the airplane rescue, where you have to plow through the entire thing in one minute, basically without reloading, missing and/or getting shot. AND if you're lucky enough to make it to the hostage, you better make your first shot count, and hope you have enough time left to actually make it out of the plane.

Anyone who's got over 940, especially over 980 in COD4 deserves either your admiration or respect for having super gaming skills and dealing with such frustration, or your pity for wasting so much damn time on something so trivial. Seriously, you dont understand difficult and frustrating till you've tried those last two missions on vet - I've been gaming for 25 years, and its just insurmountable for me, and believe me, I've tried as hard as anyone.
