How often do you build a new rig?

I have a friend who has been wanting to build THE ULTIMATE PC for many years now. In fact, when he first started specing out THE ULTIMATE PC, it was going to consist of dual 450 MHz Pentium II processors on an Asus P2B board, 256 MB PC100, and whatever the fastest video card was at the time (nVidia TNT2?) and an 8 GB HD. You know what? He never built that ultimate rig and over the years he as just put together really super dirt cheap systems as he continually saved up his money and continually waited for "the next generation". Right now he's using some cheesy Sempron system while he talks about the upcoming new AMD socket.

How long do you wait for "the right time to buy"?

I just stay about a year behind the bleading edge. At that point, most of the bugs have been worked out, and the prices are down. Every now and then when I do have a need for "the best there is" I buy it and don't look back. I'm far more interested in having a cutting edge home than a cutting edge computer though, so my house gets upgraded first.

Its usually takes me about 3 yrs to get a new system. I do a lot of research and if the system could definitely improve my work, the change is made. This past year, I built 3 new computers.
Judging by the level of work, a few minor upgrades are planned, but alas, it looks like thats it. I'm very comfortable with my production and upping my systems will be minor in the future.

Usually I rebuild my main rig every 3-4 months (for the last 10 years). However as you can see from my sig, I've been using this 4800+ for almost one year. Reason being is because CPU's have stagnated. However, I'm overdue for an upgrade, and I'll probably buy the fastest Conroe when the EE version is released.

I don't think I'll be on the 3-4 month cycle anymore though (because of stagnation).

When three conditions are satisfied:

1) I think my PC is too slow for the apps/games I'm throwing at it
2) I have the money for the parts with the best value
3) I think it's worth upgrading

I think the performance for games stutters, so i consider upgrade. Watching TV on my computer is bad quality, upgrade. Once im satisfied, it is staying for a long time.

I agree. Game stuttering is the first sign that an upgrade is on the horizon. I usually end up doing a total system overall (Board, cpu, ram, video card) about every 2 years, with minor upgrades in between as needed (sound card, harddrive, psu, etc.). Buying stuff off newegg or zipzoomfly and piecing it together yourself really makes it affordable.
