How often do you build a new rig?

As I look around those active on AT... I notice a general trend of having the most up-to-date technology. I see people upgrading from A64 to A64 dual core and things similar.

I'm still running an Athlon XP and a 5700 Ultra... though I'm planning on a $1500-2500 new one around this time next year.

So- how often do you guys get a new rig?

I never build a new rig. I just keep upgrading until my spare parts are enough to build a full machine. Usually I sell it or donate it to some of my friends who want to go to school.

Build about 1 or 2 per year for myself, and 1 for the wife per year. When my son turns 3 he will be getting his own as well.

I usually go 2-3 years between full system replacement, though parts might be upgraded in the interval if they die or (video cards) fall too far behind.

My P4 3.2C is still going strong after 2 years, though I did replace the (bad year for nvidia) fx5900 with a 6800 last year.

I'm considering a move to A64 X2 next year, but am also interested to see how intel's dual-core Pentium M based desktop chips shape up.

I game, but I don't feel the need to run 1600x1200 AA/AF at 100 fps so I can stay well behind the bleeding edge and save myself the effort of tweaking and reinstalling Windows every few months.

I usually average 1 per year. I've built 4 these past 4yrs plan to build a x64 Linux for January.

I mostly just upgrade mine periodically. I collect the old parts that I replace and then when I have one of everything, I assemble a new system out of those and set it up as a server or media center PC or whatever.

Not really been in it too long, but my first was a P3 500MHz 16MB Riva TNT, it still runs today, then about 3 years ago, made my current 2500+ Barton, 9600XT rig, will be upgrading to probably dual core, 7800 GT(opteron 165 hopefully) this summer.

the title and video card should give it away.

Right now I'm rendering an intro scene FMV for a game. Usually I'm not actually using it anymore, but the CPUs are being utilized for render/compile farming.

Thats basicly what I do as well, or with the case of my main rig, I upgrade the video card while the old one is still worth something. For example I sold my 5900Ultra for $250, so I really only paid $150 for my 6800GT which in turn I sold to upgrade to my 7800GT. I overclock my CPU's so I usualy keep them longer. I've still got a 1.6ghz northwood that runs at 2.4ghz, being givin as a Christmas present since I don't really need it anymore. Had my 3.06ghz northwood for about 3 years as well.

Every 2 to 3 years i do a full build, although generally bits are replaced in the interim. My first computer still works (XP 1600) and this computer is about to be replaced by the new machine as soon as the parts turn up.

I upgrade about every 12 to 18 months, keeping most parts (like optical drives and hard disks). I still have my old Maxtor PATA 60GB from 2001. And the parts I do upgrade are budget-line.

its about 3 years since the last and that was 3 years after the previous, & I am doing a major upgrade now but found I can reuse a lot of stuff from 2003.

When I can add at least 50% to performance with mid range parts, its worth considering. Then tend to get serious about it when games start to chug !

I'm doing a near complete re-build right now. The last one was a good while back. I'll be completing the rig in my sig before xmas and my current system is going to my son. Its still very good at playing HL2, Doom3, etc.. , but I want my son to convert over from consoles to PC.

Whenever my components can't do what I want them to do 😉

I'm still on my Barton 2500+ @ 3200+ system now. Everything is the same except that I've changed my video card and added more hard drive space.

I just helped 2 of my friends transistion over to A64 territory, but I still can do everything fine on my machine and could probably get by for another year (this machine is already 3.5 years old) with the parts that I have in my machine now, but I will probably do a big upgrade to a new system soon.. hehe can't have my friends have a better machine than I do.

Hardly ever.

I just upgrade bits but I am now at the stage where it is just more rounded then last time.

I have stuck in an extra 1GB of ram,
A bunch of HD's (DV cam captures are big!)
A 2405FPW to go along with a 23" Sony LCD that I already have
And recently a new graphics card from a GF4Ti4200 to a 6800 (£115 delivered!)

CPU is a good old P4 2.4 @ 2.699.

I play a bit of WoW and my machine plays it well.

I'd like to get a new system in 18 months maybe if I the technology and software has caught up with the Dual Pro/ Dual Core stuff 🙂.
