I smell heat and look around and find system running with smoke shooting out back grilles! Pull out power cord it still smoke. Remove cover and full of bright WHITE smoke!

Set box outside came back 15 min later and still too hot to touch with bare finger. Part missing (just fell off) it appear PCB get so hot solder melt beneath component and they fall off system board! Plastic part on board melt too and SATA connector fall right off board. The strange thing! Nothing appear burnt! Just melt. NO scorch at all. Look like heat came from inside of everything. Never see this before in 35 year experience with electronics!

This is cheap personal computer. Power supply is sparkle 400W ATX. Power supply work on tester. System board shot to hell. We have spare. Northbridge chip fell off from heat and look perfect! No crack at all. Make good keychain! Socket 478 came off stuck on CPU and CPU still work in other system! 3,4 g norwegian core.

That's really weird, the Sparkle PSU should be pretty good itself. How old is this comp?

Strange thing is power supply work right now. Put in another system it fired up. Well not literally but it works.

RAM: KIA
CPU: OK
PS: OK
HDD: Spins but completely erase.
DVD-RW: OK
Floppy: KIA
Mouse: (wireless) KIA (bluetooth receiver totally melt down)
Keyboard: (wireless) KIA (bluetooth receiver totally melt down)
Monitor: OK
NIC cable was melt in the middle!
Power cable is fuse to outlet can not unplug told to leave alone.

This has been strange day.

Ah! Wow, if the power cable was fused to the outlet... could have had to do with the quality of power in the building. Maybe the power cable itself, though that's hard to imagine. Little surges or something? I agree, this is quite weird....

Good Grief! Looking at the ports made me think of a wax museum that lost their air conditioning. At least some things survived! I would suggest a surge protector next time.

Anyways, I've never seen anything like that

possibly short circuited?

Were you using stand-offs when putting the motherboard in the case?

Only thing I can think of is it short circuiting, and getting so hot that the metal melted the plastic around it, and popped the cpu socket off. That's the only logical explanation.

Keep us updated

EDIT: guess it could've been a surge too

It was not short nor power anomaly. Best guess is isolated RF leak from "special area". Really strange it affect this one and only system.

Last time we have RF issue it was widespread and people report burning sensation, seeing fireball, etc.

You weren't using a prescott, were you?

Core is Norwegian. Faster and cooler than Preschott.
