my friend at ARUP is constantly worry about getting fired just because he thinks he is not as smart as his colleagues (mostly Phd and he is MS) there. he has been there for a few months.

I told him not to worry about it. I just don't think they will fire him. In fact, He got a raise after his review just this month.

Get fired at a large company is pretty hard. At my company, they will bend over backwards to help you. Even if for some reason you can not do your job anymore, they will give you another position in the company.

The only sure fire way to get fired is to lie about something major.

just tell your buddy that big firms tend to give out a raise about 2 weeks before the pink slip. Just so you got some extra money to fall back on :p

If you work for IBM Global Services, about 40% in 1 or 2 weeks! Depends on the company, but I would say they cycle from 1-2 years.

where i work, rarely

you have to do something really stupid (like violate the ethics code or steal, etc) to get fired without first getting some warnings from HR

if you just suck at your job, they'll warn you several times and most people figure out they need to get a different job and leave on their own
