How often am I supposed to change my brake and trasmission fluids?

Brake fluid-Unless it gets (water) contaminated (brake pedal feels spongy), I don't really think it needs to be changed very often..maybe every 5 years?

Tranny-Automatic-40,000-50,000
Manual-75,000? Doesn't need to be as often as automatic.

My car has 160,000+ miles and I've never had the transmission fluid changed. It still runs perfectly. I'm not suggesting you do the same, I don't know much about cars.

Maybe I got lucky.

No car expert here, but a mechanic once told me that if there's no problem with the brake fluid or transmission fluid, you don't change it.

I have a 1992 Honda Prelude as a second car that I've owned since new and I've never had either changed. It's still going strong.

That was one of Old Man Dumbasses' boys. Old Man Dumbass really got around. He has sons and daughters all over the place, usually giving bad advice like that.

Like I said, I'm no expert, but it's worked for me. August will make 13 years I've been driving the Prelude with no problems.

haha, great post

if you are hard on your tranny, towing city driving, may need new fluid in as little as 20000 miles.

i replace the fluid in my brake system every time i put pads on. it gets very dirty and the calipers last longer with good fluid.

As long as it is pink 😉

I never change or add transmission fluid to my car, and one day, it just won't shift anymore and died. 🙁 expensive mistake.

dude, your gears are crying...😛

civic are easy, what year is it...

honda uses the 3/8 plug, fits right into the rachet... unbolt, drain, re-bolt and fill

dont flush if the car is really old / high mileage.
if it's high, drain and fill 2-3 times.. so drain once, drive around for a few days, let the new fluid circulate, drain and fill another 2 times and it'll be good as new..

buy a case of atf from honda.. dont use anything else.. they're known to have problem with other fluids, making tranny jerky, etc..

Brake fluid, depending on your driving, every 1-3 years. You don't want rust building up and causing damage inside your super expensive to fix ABS system.

Tranny fluid I would change every 30k or 2 years. It'll only help.

Some of you guys forget, many newer vehicles do not recommend changing the tranny fluid. My father's Lexus say not to change unless you are towing

My '87 Mitsubishi pu had 270K on it, w/original brake fluid, when I got rearended by a county cop. I outbraked her when traffic came to a quick stop.
The manual tranny? Changed 4 or 5 times.

Have brake fluid flushed every 2 years
Have automatic transmission fluid flushed every 15,000 miles... even when they say it is "lifetime" fluid.

Brake fluid is every 2 years or every brake service, which ever comes first.

Most auto trans fluids are chaged every 30K. For a honda make sure you use Mobil1's Trans fluid. About the same price as the stuff at the dealer but performs better.

Since it is a new to you car, I would change both now so you at least know it has been done. Also they are easy to do on that car and very cheap.
