How not to drive...

Man, I'm glad I don't ride that road. Stupid cagers don't seem to understand the concept of staying in your own lane.

I particularly like the douche in the G who can't shake the guy on the sport bike and won't let him past either...that moron was all over the road trying to shake the bike but he couldn't do it let alone do it safely. I HATE fucktards like that when I'm on my bike.

Is that you in the Elise? 😱

People can't drive in general without turning everything into a alpha male machismo pissing contest; it's why I drive what I drive. Because no doubt that G driver has to floor it and jockey for position with other cars at lights too.

So it's OK for the motorcycle to pass on the double-yellow in your world?

The guy in the G was an incompetent driver who couldn't stay in his own lane, I'll absolutely grant that. However, that doesn't in any way, shape, or form give the guy on the motorcycle the right to pass on a double-yellow.

I have absolutely ZERO sympathy for the morons on motorcycles who want to pass on double-yellow. It's riders like them who make the rest of us look bad and who get people in cars pissed off at motorcycles to begin with. One jackass on a sportbike passing on double-yellow does far more to make the general public hate motorcycles than some asshole with loud pipes on a Harley who otherwise obeys traffic laws.

Man I might use a little of the other lane in a turn but people had half a car plus!

What road is that?

Oh and looks like some people got to know understeer face to face

While far from excusing any of the drivers, I wonder if any of them did it specifically because there was a bunch of people around filming them...

Many people in cars and trucks will actually pull over and wave motorcyclists by in my world. The ones that don't get passed with authority when it's safe to do so.

What's to get pissed off about? Sorry, I can't control the emotions of idiots in cars nor will I ever try.

That said, I wouldn't have been that close to the guy in the G as he was driving like an incompetent dumbass and I definitely wouldn't have tried to pass him.

CHP aggressively tickets offenders, both bikes and cars.

True, CHP loves to spend a few hours every Saturday and Sunday on Palomar Mountain trying to keep people from killing themselves or others. I've ridden Palomar probably half a dozen times as it is only about 40 minutes from my house but these days I usually only go up there during the week if I have some free time. Too crowded on the weekend.

If they're at or above the speed limit, give me one good reason why they should pull over to let anyone other than an emergency vehicle pass.

I'm right there with you on people who go 40 in a 55 and never get over, but there's no reason to expect someone to pull over and let you by if they're already going at least the speed limit.

IMO the episode with the G showcased two people who should not have been on the road. The idiot in the G should not have been weaving all over the place and the moron on the motorcycle should not have been trying to pass on a double-yellow.

I've done my share of stupid shit while driving/riding in the past, so my hands are far from absolutely clean, but anymore I just don't have sympathy for people like the guy on the bike behind that G. Yes, the G was driving like an asshole, but that doesn't excuse the guy on the bike and it doesn't make passing on double-yellow OK.

FYI, even if the car pulls to the side, the pass still isn't technically legal unless the car comes to a complete stop, regardless of whether they're waving you by or not.

Just a note - I highly doubt it's the case in CA, but in VT it is legal to pass on a double yellow if you can do so safely (with restrictions regarding hills, curves, etc).

Building on your statement, not contradicting it:

VT is one of, IIRC, only 3 states in which passing on a double-yellow is allowed. CA is not. Technically, VT Statutes require that no-passing zones be marked with "signs", rather than markings on the roadway. In the majority of states, however, roadway markings constitute sufficient notice.

If there is a sign and you pass on the double-yellow in VT, you're in violation of VT Statutes.

23 V.S.A. § 1036. No-passing zones

(a) The traffic committee is authorized to determine those portions of any highway under its jurisdiction where overtaking and passing or driving on the left side of the roadway would be especially hazardous and may, by appropriate signs indicate the beginning and end of the zones, and when the signs are in place and clearly visible to an ordinarily observant person, every driver of a vehicle shall obey the directions.

(b) Where signs are in place to define a no-passing zone as set forth in subsection (a) of this section no driver shall at any time drive to the left of the center of the roadway within the no-passing zone.

(c) Restrictions imposed under this section do not apply when subdivision 1031(a)(2) of this title applies, or where a vehicle is turning left into an alley, private road or driveway. (Added 1971, No. 258 (Adj. Sess.), § 3, eff. March 1, 1973.)
§ 1031(a)(2) deals with instances where there is a physical obstruction (e.g. fallen tree limb) in the roadway which makes it impossible to continue without crossing a double-yellow, so that's not in play at the moment.

Damn, why do those people even bother going up there? Seems like they have a hard enough time figuring out brake and gas.

Looks like those people can't control their cars. What pissed me off was the video to the right where the GTO ends up losing control and smacking into a handful of bikes.

If I am riding on the weekends with my friends and we come up on a car and there's a double yellow, I will pass IF (a) I have a straight away with at least 1/4-1/2 mi of clear visibility. I don't pass on curves or going up a hill with a crest I can't see over (b) another rider has passed said vehicle and is acting as a lookout and giving me the go ahead (c) the vehicle has moved over partially onto the shoulder therefore giving me the nod to pass them.

If I'm riding on my own, I do not pass on double yellow.

If I get pulled over and cited and I'm guilty, I'll pay the ticket.

Exactly this.

Most of the mountain roads here are highways and have no posted speed limit just recommended speeds for the curves. Palomar Mountain the speed limit is 55mph and CHP will generally leave you alone as long as you aren't dragging a knee or exceeding that limit. Cars and trucks are notoriously slower than bikes on these roads and like I said earlier, most will move over and wave you past when it is convenient and safe to do so. These people get a wave gesture as a thank you when I ride on past.

Sometimes you'll get stuck behind some hammer head going 30 mph though who just won't move over. He gets passed when I find a safe spot where I can see down the road far enough to get around him with a good safety margin. People with RV's seem to be the worst offenders of this and I've been stuck behind these guys for miles sometimes before being able to pass. Kind of inconsiderate when you have 30 cars and bikes stacked up behind you not to pull over and let them by.
