How much for a new dog? That's about tops for me.

People who spend thousands on dogs or cats have far more money than sense. How many malaria treatments could you buy for that money? You know, saving actual human beings from dying.

Quoted for stupidity.

Do you say the same thing to anybody that's spending money on things that aren't helping people from dying?

Why don't you go posting the same crap in any of the technical forums here?

So based on the creed you live by, your finances would stand up to an audit that compares the recipients of all your spending with the value of donating all or parts of such money to efforts to save thousands of lives of those sickened by malaria.

I'd almost pay to see how the walk matches the talk here, even if such payment would be at the expense of otherwise donating this money to save lives of those stricken with malaria in Africa.

When video cards break people replace them, they don't spend 3 grand repairing them. If they did, then I would tell them that's a colossal waste of money that could be far better spent elsewhere (on dying people or whatnot).

this is the crux of the issue

most people used to agree that 'things' , like video cards and animals, were personal property to do with as the owner wished

now, many people have moved animals out of the same personal property category that ipods and video cards are in

they have moved animals into some quazi-human something category, certain people may have custody of the animal, but you can't necessarily just 'replace' it like you can go from an iphone 3 to an iphone 4S, at least not without a bunch of people giving you crap for not honoring the animals rights

this is why you now 'adopt' a pet from a shelter, you don't 'buy' it (even though you still pay $) like you did 100 years ago

depends on the procedure. id pay to have an obstruction removed from a young dog to save its life and give us many more years together. i probably wouldnt pay to treat terminal cancer to extend a life by a few months.

This kind of deal is why vets have it made. They basically get a pretty sizable chunk of cash for a few hours work (due to their expertise on the subject) because people have a strong emotional attachment to their animals.

Me personally, the wife's dog got pretty sick and we ended up spending just under a 1000 (or perhaps just over, can't remember) on the vet bills. Problem is, a lot of these things gradually start costing more, and more, and more. It starts off as $500, then becomes another $750. In this type of situation, I usually say to myself, well, already spent 500, whats another 750 if it finishes the job.

However, if we're told 1250 up front, it might be a bit more difficult to justify. I suppose it'll also depend on the attachment to the dog. Right now, our dog is finding himself in trouble more, and more, and more. At this point in time, if a 1250 vet bill was to present itself, I dunno how she'd feel about forking out the dough.

But for me, it really depends on the dog. If the dog is proving to be more of a pain, it's pretty hard to justify spending $1250 to keep him around.

we just paid $150.00 to get a growth removed from our lab/sharpei mix, Pepper. didn't bat an eye. Now, if the surgery was more than $500.00, it would be a different story, because that's a lot of money and not in our budget at all.

Probably a couple thousand for myself, depending on age of dog and probability of the dog recovering and getting back to normal.

I had a female coworker a couple years ago who decided to have a massive operation done on her dog which cost ~$16K. She was a certified nutjob, but the dog ended up OK as far as I know.

I would be tempted to spend more than I should. Thankfully, I haven't had to make such a difficult decision yet in my life. Until I had to make such a decision I don't know which way I would go, so I'd have to play it by ear if/when the circumstance fell upon me.

my dog has cataracts at 6. cataract surgery is $3300. long term chance of success is about 75***37; per the ophthalmologist. i'm not sure that it would improve his quality of life much. he seems fairly normal for not being able to see much. probably won't be getting the surgery.

If I could stand to have a dog (or cat) in the house, any medical bills better not exceed the cost of replacement or it is sleepy time for Fido.

(I am definitely not a pet person and do not want any kind of animal in my home.)

You are not comparing a video card to a dog?

My video card doesn't meet me at the door every day when I get home. My video card doesn't jog with me down the street. My video card won't alert me when someones at the door. My video card won't unquestionably lay down its life for me if it ever came to that. My video card doesn't curl up at my feet while I'm watching tv. My video card doesn't play tug of war with me. Basically, my video card isn't FUCKING ALIVE. My dog is and it loves me unconditionally. I have a bond with my dog and I love my dog. If you love your video card you're F'd in the head. But loving a dog.... there is nothing wrong with that. There is a reason why dogs are called man's best friend.

 Why spend thousands keeping a seriously ill dog alive, when animals shelters are putting down thousands of healthy dogs everyday.

I have no set limit, it all depends on the dog.

If you're getting a dog just to treat it like an object that can be replaced you shouldn't have one. The guy said his max was $500 no matter what what wrong with the dog.

The whole deal is too many get their pet as an accessory. Too many also want to spend more than they earn.

It's a tradegy.

Just the money I spend feeding feral cats in my backyard exceeds $100 per week.

How much would people who are willing to spend $thousands on their pets, pay for meat which comes from organic grass fed animals? Would they stand up to this sort of audit as well or are their feeling about animals confined to their own pets?

They can be replaced, quite easily to. So the guy has a budget, I'm sure he knows his financial situation and the value of his dog a lot better than you do.

I think you are the one who shouldn't have a dog.

I don't care the amount. If my Dawg would need it, he'd get it.

I dont think of my Dawg as a pet, I think of him as a family member.

He's the first one that greets me when I come home from work. Makes me happy when I am sad, he has feelings and all he wants is to be loved. So yes, a family member. And I feel the same about my two kittens. My "family members" act more human than a lot of people I know. So yes, I would spend "any" amount if needed.
