How much would you pay someone to design a site with the same features as Anandtech?

Taking into consideration that Anandtech.com is more than just forums.

Also, how much would it cost to host a site like this?

The host would need ColdFusion I believe.

Site design alone, I would pay only pennies; the main page is a CF template, and the forums are designed to AT standards, but can be purchased by anyone else of course. As for the content of the site itself, I'm not sure that can be expressed in any reasonable number.

I didn't mean paying for the content but the cost involved to have someone create a site that had the same functionality...similar forum, password protected logon,

I plan to pay someone to design a site for me so I am just doing a little 'comparison shopping' to see what the going rate for similar site would be.

The site that I would like built will also need secure e-commerce capabilites and database connectivity.

yes I am an idiot.

I would agree although I would increase the hosting budget, CF support isn't cheap.

The main page is CF (Cold Fusion?)?

Are you talking about anandtech.com or forums.anandtech.com main page.

If it is the anandtech.com main page, what features on the main page require CF?

Is designing a site with e-commerce capabilities, secure logon and password, and real-time account information updating going to cost significantly more or are those feature that can be enable quite easily?

No, I'm not trying to get this done for free I just want to be able to hold a half-educated converstation with a web developer when I approach them.

Thanks.

When you say eCommerce, what kind of services/products are you going to sell?

I know of some web hosts who sell pre-packaged solutions which are quite affordable.

Depends if Anand wants a contract or full time employee. For a site like this, I would charge at least 40k-50k a year.

If Anand only needs a web designer/developer around for such & such things, then only around 25-30k a year.

The eCommerce is nothing more than paying for a 3-month subcription to a magazine. So the customer would just have to log in and have the option to pay with a credit card.
I have thought about using PayPal but PayPal kindof has a less-than-professional quality to it.

I think the hardest part for me to understand is the realtime account updating features. For example, the customer must be able to log in and click a box in the interactive question/multiple choice answer portion of their account. Then when they submit that it should permanently show up with the answer they chose (but also not have the option to change their answer).

Yes, what I plan to do is above-the-board.

No, it is not porn.

Holy crap!

I just spoke with a web developer (one of the more respectable ones in my area) and they told me it would be at least $3500 for a customized shopping cart and a minimum of $2500 for the javascript web site.

Heck I never planned to make that much money with the site!!

To all the idiots saying $200, you think 2 or 3 hours of labor is enough to setup a site like this even if it was ALL templates? Are you nuts?
