How much would you give up to have a flexible work schedule and the ability to work from home?

If you currently work in the office from 8-5 every day how much would you give up in terms of salary to have flexible work hours and the ability to work from home?

If you currently have this setup how much would your company have to pay you to commute and come into the office from 8-5 every day?

That is what I was thinking too. Seems about right but I guess it all depends on how far you commute.

I wouldn't get anything done at home. I'd be wandering off to the fridge every hour or so, I'd boot up the gaming pc for just a quickie, and not stop for 5 hours. I lack focus, I need to be in the office.

Plus there are chicks at the office. :)

~10% cut to get it sounds about right, but thats what I have now, and a 10% bonus wouldn't make me give it up.

Yeah, about the same for me. My drive to work is only ~7 minutes so that doesn't bother me. I could do alot of my job from home but I'd miss socializing with my co-workers/friends.

It depends.
Currently, I wouldn't take any pay cut as I simply can't afford it until I sell my old townhouse. So, if I could work from home 2 days per week, then I would only be willing to take a cut worth 2 days gas.

I really don't mind the office ... and I am somewhat lucky as my hours are pretty flexible. (have to schedule 42.5 hours each week, must be in by 9am. I currently schedule 7am-3:30pm so I can beat most of the traffic.)

My company is pretty flexible actually and I can and do work from home sometimes.

I'm live 10 miles from where I work though so it's not really a big deal. I actually ride my bike to work a couple days a week.

Probably nothing. On days where I work from home, I don't show up to work aggrivated from sitting in traffic (30 mins to go 8 miles every day!), parking (office lot is full after 9, despite the fact that we pay a few bucks a month for the privilege), etc. I get a lot more done because there aren't any distractions from socializing (which I like to do, dont get me wrong). Meetings are to a minimum because someone has to decide if its actually necessary to even have it once conference lines become necessary.

I'd bet that if companies let their top performers at the office have a choice to work from home a few days a week, productivity would increase. Couldn't be a blanket policy, because otherwise the office slackers would do nothing at home, but it could work out well for some. So why would I take a pay cut to accomplish more?

I'd take a 2-5% cut.

I live like right down the block from my office, but it'd be nice to just be on-call and get paid for it on holidays and whatnot where I pretty much just sit here and babysit the machines for 8 hours in case something fails.

I kept my salary when I worked it out where I can work from home. In fact I got a raise (but just because I was owed one after 6mo).

They would have to buy me a house. I live in WA and work at home and our offices are mostly in CA. I can't afford to buy a house there, so it comes down to them buying me a house or keep working from home here. We are both happy with the current situation.

As much as I'd love to work from home, I don't think I could do it. I would have a lot of trouble disciplining myself to wake up before noon and be productive.

Zero.

I want to separate home from work. If it would be like doing school work on my system all day and night like I've done for years, I'd kill myself. I actually like the commute and crappy cubicle they give me; the change of scenery is good.

I'm a teacher. No way I want all my students coming to my house!! :p

I also prefer separate environments for work and home. Although, during the summer, the work I do around the house constitutes another full-time job.

i went down to $50/hr to do this.

i actually did more work. and i would wake up at 3am remembering something, and do it. go back to sleep at 5am, wake up at 11am for a 11:30 teleconference, etc

downside: my sleep habits became so screwed up.

I kinda have a flexible arrangement, its based on getting projects donw but since I'm a senior manager, I have to be flexible to others schedules and have to attend a lot of meetings.

So, sure I can come in late if I have a meeting at 10am but I may end up staying till 10pm working towards a deadline.

I can work from home, but I'm not very productive at home and since my office is only 7-miles away or about 15-minutes I don;t mind the commute at all.

And I would hate to give up my flexability, I earned the right by being very good at this job and being promoted up the ladder.

I could take a higher paying job elesewhere but I would lose a lot of my flexibility and a lot of upside on my career path

I have a flexible schedule and work from home.

I'd rather go in to an office than work from home. It's only because my current office is one hour each way without traffic, 1:30 with not bad traffic, 2+ hours with bad traffic that I don't go in to work more often. It wasn't a question of money that got me go-ahead for working at home. It was the fact that after they offered me the job I said, "I'm not taking the job unless I can work from home, 'cause the commute would suck and I'm not moving," and they said, "Ok, you don't need to show up at the office."

The flexible part is good though. I'd probably give up a little bit of salary to keep that.

<- flexible hours, working from home right now. My team is usually limited to WFH ~1 day per week, unless there are other reasons (sick, etc). This week though everyone has been on vacation so I've been at home for several days. It's got it's pluses and minuses, the minuses being that the work gets done, period. It's your ass on the line if it doesn't. No dropping everything and clocking out at 5 pm. Most of the time only a 40 hour work week is expected, but there are times when I've put it multiple 12+ hour days in a week.
