How much would you charge?

A person asked me today how much I would charge to make a simple 2 or 3 page website. There wont be very many graphics (maybe like 3 or 4) and I wont do any editing of the graphics. He also said he might want a message board put up. So how much would you charge to do that? say with the message board and without the message board.

Edit for spelling. Sorry, I just got off a 10 hour work shift.

$50, and for the message board $80. Tell him it's very very complicated, and set up ezboard. ;)

how long would it take you? I guess $50 an hour would be fair. make sure you explain up front about support/upgrading/etc.

I am not sure how long it would take me. My hunch is that it would take me about 3 or 4 hours to make a decent looking 2 or 3 page site. A bit longer if I have to figure out how to set up a message board. Thanks for the advice on the part about support/upgrading/etc. though I might cut him a deal if I am going to host his site for him.

You can afford to charge more if you have a portfolio or experience doing this. If you're just a weekend warrior (meaning you do HTML in your spare time) then I wouldn't expect you could request much. This person may be unsuspecting so it may be a moot point. I'd charge about $25/hr. for straight HTML and $35-$50/hr. for dynamic language (ASP/CF/PHP, etc.) work. Flash and hybrid stuff go for higher, depending on experience.

For what they're requesting, make sure you can accomplish it in 3-4 hours because the last thing you want to do is underestimate and have to tell them it will cost them more money than originally expected. To the point, I'd say about $100-$150... about $300 with a message board. (Did they know they can create their own HTML sites using MS Word ? :D ... the message board will be your challenge, especially configuration and actual deployment on the host).

Many "companies" (whether they are actually 1 person or not) won't work for less than $500 per project so keep that in mind as well. Depends on your reputation / portfolio / availability.

Heh, he mentioned that one of his friends was going to charge him $800. And I just said that I would have to think about what I would charge. So he is but he isnt unsuspecting. I dont want to charge him a lot more than I (frankly) deserve. But as you said I dont want to underestimate the time nor cut myself short and undercharge him. So I think I'll charge $50/hour after I meet with him and find out exactly what he wants and how he wants it to looks etc.

Just to put it in perspective, pro flash freelancers think charging $50/hr. is a lot of dough. You mention that on a design board and they'll request your resume in 2-seconds flat. That's why I thought $25/hr for even straight HTML was fair and on par... but in some markets (NY, Chicago, etc.) they actually think $25/hr is a steal of a deal (first hand experience).

If you can get it, all the more power to you.

Does LA, CA or Orange County count as one of those markets?

I'd say so... if you have big web development companies commanding $75-$100/hr for something, then web projects of any magnitude should *seem* like they warrant a higher rate. I know for a fact right now a consultant in Chicago told me $25/hr was too little for a going rate and that he compared it with companies charging $90/hr around him. I was shocked at the difference. How can they charge so much for such simple work that the majority of us with computers can do ? They may figure overhead into that equation, so you have to adjust a bit. This "what should I charge" question has been asked many times on many boards and the answer has always been... "it depends"... :D

Is it any concern of the site creator, whether it can be found by search engines or not?
