What would it cost to upgrade a network from 10Base to 100base Ethernet? Assuming that the wiring is all there, just need to upgrade the switches and such, network of about 3000 users

I ask because my former college, I?m an alum, runs 10base currently and the current batch of bitchy students want them to upgrade to 100base to make it faster, yet the have no idea how much it would cost what it would take

Also some genius said "iinstead of upgrading to a 100 if they ever do anything they should just go to the gig/sec network. other schools have done it and it's what's going to be common in the future"

Because that?s really going to happen

And if any of you know what school(s) run gigE if any

all u need to do is replace the hubs with switches and probably some of the nics

i would do a price check for you, but you can do that yourself.

It won't really improve internet speeds but a 100 network will increase reliability and make things smoother. Gig to students computers is not economical as of yet IMHO. Just replacing the switches is way too generic. You have to really spend the $$ if you want the right equipment.

Ask the whining students for one legitimate reason they need a faster network - downloading MP3's and movies isn't legitimate...

Umm, yeah. If you have money to upgrade, go with GigE. The price difference is small over the long term and you get ~ 6 times the throughput .

<--- Talking about consumer grade .

Probably not that much, ($100 for a 16 port switch) at least if you go the low end route and just buy mid-end stuff. Like someone said, 100Mbs ethernet is on the way out. It will be here for while , but it will get replaced sometime in the future.

so 3000/16 = 187, round to 190 to be safe, say 150-200$ mid range = $28,500-$38,000 + other cocts which im sure there are
that isnt what i woudl call not much

If you're school's going to do the upgrade you might as well go gig so you won't have to upgrade for a very long time. Your school won't have to lay down additional dinero anytime soon.

The problem may be the wiring. It would cost a lot more to rewire than it would to replace a few switches and routers.

unless the school is dissolving anytime soon it would probably be more cost effective to go gig. I know 36k is piddly to alumni's budgets :D

it's 3000 freaking users, what do you expect? they're gonna have to upgrade it sooner or later. i mean, you figure each student is paying roughly 20k/year (or the government is paying up to that amount for public schools), so that's around... $60 million every year. you're telling me they can't find $30,000 in there to upgrade the network to something that wasn't obsolete a decade ago?
