Say, Obama (well, wouldn't that be Hillary actually?) starts to normalize relations with Cuba and starts trading again.

Probably increase availability of sugar and cigars (slightly reduce prices). The embargo should have been dropped with the cold war, we already trade with far worse enemies than Castro.

We could reduce the price of sugar if we'd end the damn sugar quotas. And get soda's that have sugar instead of the awful HFCS, like the rest of the world.

Might be my taste buds, but I cannot really tell much of a difference between US (corn syrup) Coke and Mexican (sugar based) Coke. The aftertaste might be slightly improved, but beyond that they taste about the same to me.

It's funny, people are all anti-HFCS, but there isn't any real evidence against it. Studies have focused on fructose, not HFCS, which has almost the same composition as regular sugar. The problem, as it stands, is too much sugar.

Oh, and prices wouldn't change. Our "free market" system heavily subsidizes just about everything coming out of the ground. And we'd never hurt our "poor farmers" (such a joke).

Miami tourism would take a hit as Havana beckons. The availability of doctors in the US might increase as Cuban doctors apply for visas.

You mean you want some good counterfeit cigars, right? The chances of landing legitimate Cuban's are pretty slim. Sure a lot of fakes do come from Cuba, but opening up the USA to Cuban cigar commerce will only drive up the price of authentic branded cigars as they are a rare comodity as it is.

Cuban expatriates could go home...finally. I'm sure Miami would be a far better place for it. :D
Then, the US could do away with the "dry feet-legal immigrant" status of Cuban refugees. Put them back on the same standing as all other foreign residents.

Personally, I've always supported ending the embargo against Cuba. Since we're doing business with China, one of the worst of the Communist countries and Vietnam, a country where we fought Communism for ~ 10 years...Cuba should be NOT be on the "blacklist" of countries.

I want some (legal) Cubano cigars and rum.

It never made sense to me that we would have an embargo against Cuba but an open trade policy with Red China and at the time the Soviet Union and Warsaw Pact. Hell if we're going to boycott an island Sicily would make more sense.

If Clinton felt like we could trust our nuclear secrets with them, surely we can trade with them!?

Didn't you know that only a Republican can open up trade with a communist country?
If a Democrat does it they are communist sympathizers and traitors to the US.

This thread is about Cuba and our economy, not HFCS. :p But yes, there is evidence (search for previous threads on this topic).

Well, if we trade something of value for our fiat dollars, I would say that it is a good deal for us.

Cuba might be a good place for Americans to get their medical care for cheap. I've heard of people who went to India or Thailand to get their surgeries done because they can't afford the cost here in the States.

Cuban oil renews embargo debate
from 2006

~~~ the U.S. Geological Survey confirmed it: The North Cuba Basin held a substantial quantity of oil ? 4.6 billion to 9.3 billion barrels of crude and 9.8 trillion to 21.8 trillion cubic feet of natural gas. ~~~
In May, with much fanfare, Rep. Jeff Flake, R-Ariz., and Sen. Larry Craig, R-Idaho, introduced twin bills to the House and Senate that would exempt Big Oil from the embargo.
