probably double that if it something like WoW.

. .. it is almost like making a movie.

and you "game's engine" is probably at least $300,000 if you don't develop it yourself . . .

think of 20-50+ people working together for 3-5 years . . . and pay their salaries every week
:Q

and voice actors are no longer 'cheap' . .. i wonder how much they paid Patrick Stewart for his brief role in Oblivion?

quite an 'investment'

World of Warcraft reputedly cost about $60m over it's five year development cycle. Console games easily go over $10m total development costs these days. I don't think you're getting into the MMO market in any serious way for less than $25 - 30m anyway.

$5

Money spent on developing the game, $5

Cost of getting a famous actor's voice in the game, $500,000.

Marketing the game, $5,000,000.

Exclusive licence for franchise (assuming it is a franchise that they cannot simply buy, like the NFL) to ensure no competition, $50,000,000.

Making a game that is buggier than hell and shoving a beta version into retail channels to piss off your customers who beta test it for you and stifle innovation and creativity?
Priceless...............

There are free engines if you just want to try something for fun. Then you need programmers, lets say a team of 10 @ $600,000/yr for 3 years. Hardware, office space, fees associated with building the business (attorneys, consultants, etc.) It's expensive :p

You might be able to create a game with a fairly limited world with an indie team on a budget. The core programming can be accomplished pretty reasonably, but when you get to stuff like artwork for the zones, audio, animation, and itemization that is a crapload of work.

Once you've got it ready to beta, regardless of how cheaply it was produced, you now need a serious infrastructure that will have to scale up from beta to release. Again, you could keep this small to start and scale with success, but you're still looking at serious dollars. An indie would have to give up things like 24 x 7 x 365 reliability and support for massive numbers of players.

$5

$5 on development for the actual game.

$500,000 to get a famous actor to voice act for 10 minutes.

A few million on marketing.

100 million on exclusive licence for franchise (assuming it is a franchise that they cannot simply buy, like the NFL) to ensure no competition.

QFT

The game was from 2003...but it's still fugly looking. More important that looks, the game has to have some feature that draws customers in. Whether it be the atmosphere, some sort of gameplay mechanism, a franchise, whatever.

Shouldn't be that hard to get the money. Hell, look at how much investment money Infinium Labs got, and my dog leaves more "end product" in a tightly coiled pile on the lawn. </Brian Griffin>

They thought they could just buy a 3D engine, slap some crappy graphics on it, and roll in the dough. Of course they did it with suprisingly few people... I guess thats why it was rated 1.2 out of 10.

they should have put AEG's viral marketing to work :p

that would have sold at least a few thousand games . . .

occasionally i see "teams' of people work together over the Internet - usually to do a "fan-made" project like an unofficial Expansion Pack. . . occasionally their work is mindblowingly [is that a word?] good like TX2: Shadows of the Metal Age . . . a Thief 2 expansion as good [well written, acted, scripted, debugged - "perfect"] as anything LG studios ever put out. ;)

i guess it is possible for creative volunteers to come together to make a whole new video game . . . . on the super cheap.

EDIT: i can help with the writing and voices.
:D

LOL at the review:

"In a particularly absurd mission, you're required to help defend a Confederate cannon from a Union attack amid blasts that set the nearby surroundings on fire. After disposing of the enemy soldiers, we watched our Confederate brethren undergo a series of seizures, then run headlong into the flames themselves, and then come running back out alight to fall over and die for no good reason."

you could always join a group of modders . . . gain experience part time . . . and you gotta LOVE it . . . it's pretty tedious to most of us. :p

There was this MMORPG called Mourning that was released a couple years ago. It was developed by some newbie programmers in something like Romania and the guy who financed it here was literally burning the beta CDs individually in his house. And the server couldn't handle more than 10 people. I swear that thing couldn't have costed more than $50,000 to make it.

isn't that how Serious Sam - a fps - was made? . . . and it was quirky enough - and FUN - to get really popular . . . . the last one was pretty awful though - a parody of the first two.

I'd say anywhere from 10-50 million depending on what you want to do. Then you need to tack on millions in equipment and infrastructure to handle such an operation.

Why not try making your own modules and maybe even a persistent world in NeverWinter Nights.

Get some practice with the NeverWinter Nights Toolset. and try a few things. Make something awesome with it, start your own persistent world, and maybe you will get "noticed" by the right people.

i believe you can do the same with Oblivion . . . all the tools are there to make another game expansion, i believe :p
[already there are some awesome mods . . . Ancient Goblin City, Tower of the Lich King. . . kumiko manor . . . talented authors

and that's what i suggested . . .

you are either gonna love it . . . or give up ;)
costs nothing but your time and you will learn a bit about making a game.
