Last month the Netflix Prize competition ended.

The competition was good for publicity and all, but how much would it have cost Netflix to achieve 10% improvement either internally or hiring a team in traditional sense?

100 million maybe?

I'm not sure how anyone could answer your question, but I can tell you that $1 million would have bought them about 6-8 man-years of software development work.

Maybe someone in the field could give a good estimate based on various factors such as:

The contest lasted almost 3 years, although beforehand duration would be unknown. But also these were people with daytime jobs working on the competition.

2 teams collaborated in the end to achieve the 10%.

I don't know if there was a community around the competition which shared resources/ideas that would not have been available had a traditional team worked on the problem by themselves.

etc

yea at most, 10 good researchers could be bought for a year at 1 million.
course this type of thing is rather limited. the prize was rather low i think, esp when you consider to win the folks had to combine efforts between several people by the end
