A bunch of my friends were thinking of going to Europe next summer and we were wondering roughly how much it would cost to go from Paris down to Marseille , through Monaco(maybe), Vatican City, Rome, then to Greece (santorini maybe?)

Minus the airfare and visas, how much would it cost as far as food and lodging goes? I hear hostels are really cheap but would they be readily available in all these locations. I would assum so since they're pretty popular tourist locations.

Might depends on the time of year, there can be seasonal varations on some things, and in the summer hostel availability will likely be reduced.

Yeah that's what we figured so we really wanan get a ballpark estimate so we can make sure we have enough to not run into money problems

The cities that you are mention are far from cheap, and 2 weeks between that many destinations isn't going to be an enjoyable experience. It look like you are going to use up 5-6 days of traveling by train/air/bus leaving 8-10 days between 6 cities (1.5 day per city). The cost is going to be high because of the large amount of time spending on getting around. EUrail pass would be around $350-400, and it would be slightly cheaper if you are willing to sleep on the train for a few nights. Accomodations will cost at least $1000 (at the bottom end), and entertainment is expensive in the EU.

My guess is that it would cost between $2000-$2500 for low budget travel including airfare. The cost might be a bit lower if a few friends share rooms.

IMHO, it would be more enjoyable if you cut down the travel to 2-3 major locations due to the time constrain.

Check out Thorn Tree Lonely Planet forum & get a guide book/s on the locations that you are intended to see for more information.

well the more the better...depends tho. how are you going to travel? bus? train? you gotta factor that into you equation. then i would take JinLien's advice and cut it down to less places. you have too many things to do in 2-3 weeks while enjoying yourself. also, staying in a smaller geographical area would help since a lot of money is going to go on busses. i'd say no less then $2000.

Hostels + train. Should not be crazy expensive. I had a trip like that planned a few years ago with a bunch of friends, but my father had a heart attack and I had to fly home. They had a blast though.
