How much work do you do in a day?

And by time working I don't mean time spent while at work, I mean time spent doing actual work. As in Office Space, for example, where Peter tells the managers that he only does ~15 minutes of real work in a given work day.

This can also apply to school work, house work, whatever. Just time spent doing a productive, non-leisure activity.

Please state the amount of time spent doing work, what the work is, and also how much sleep you get a night.

This isn't for any type of project - I'm just curious.

Usually around the same. Although on some really busy days I have to do like 4.5 hours of work

At busy times, it could literally be as much as 20+ hours of intense work; at slow times, it could be none at all. There's about a 50:50 distribution of effort throughout the year, so it balances out. When things are busy I might sleep 4 hours or less a night. When things are quiet I sleep probably 4-6 hours a night. I'm something of an insomniac.

My line of work is consulting.

Yeah.

Though like Descartes I've had huge project where I've put in 15-20 hour days for a couple of weeks.

I'm also a consultant, I have rationalized my behavior by saying I'm payed to be available, and I am available 24\7 with no resentment... so my conscience is clear

at school, 4 hrs a day on average

while interning, maybe 2..the engineers there would complain about long hours, and most of the time they were simply hit a few buttons and wait for a test to run and wait for the data to report at a meeting..seemed like about 45 mins of actual work per day!

I ask only because I recently got out of school and into the "real world" and see how long these 8-9 hour work days are, and how much can get done if people actually spent that time working. I know if I dedicated that much time a week to my school work I would have gotten far better grades.

But I also notice that, at least for me as an entry level engineer, I'm doing maybe 20 minutes to an hour of actual work a day. It's ironic that I spend more time commuting to and from work than I do actually working.

And even with such little work I do, I still only manage to get 5 or 6 hours of sleep a day.

my days vary so much its hard to say. some days (heck, i've even gone 3 weeks) with doing nothing but running a report that takes about 10 minutes a day. other times im so busy i don't have time to do any goofing off.

really depends on the day.

there are some days where spend almost my entire day surfing the net and watching tv shows from my dvr on my laptop, maybe rebooting 1-2 servers all day, and then leave early... and there are other days where I'm doing work pretty much all day.

today's one of those days. I got hit with monitoring duty as soon as I walked in the door, so I'll spend my entire shift with one eye on our server monitoring interface while surfing the net in between refreshes/updates.

the minimum is usually about an hour a day but usually no more than 2. Other days it's closer to 5 out of an 8hr day. I think the most its been is maybe 7 in a 12 hr day.
