I just installed wireless stuff in the house and its working fine but when I tried file transfers the speed was disappointing. And the main reason I did this was so I could stream media to an Xbox 360 in the future, plus to get rid of wires of course.
Anyway its a 54Mbps network. The router is a D-Link DI-524. There are two laptops in the house with built in wireless and they work fine. Bandwidth isn't a concern.
I moved the modem w/ the wireless router down to the home theater room in the basement. In the basement is an Xbox connected via ethernet cable as well as the HTPC connected via ethernet cable.
My main PC (the one I want fast access to via the XBox and HTPC) is 2 floors above in a bedroom. It's connected by a 54Mbps PCI adapter (D-Link). The signal strength is listed as "Low" or "very low" (it varies). That's only 1 bar and it says it is connected at 54Mbps.
During file transfer the speed is only about 8-10Mbps. There's no lag or packet loss as far as I can tell, just slow speed.
I am wondering if a new antenna put on the router would improve this? Something like this: http://www.dlink.com/products/?sec=0&pid=325
Or do I need something better?
I'd prefer not to move the location of the router because I'd have to buy 2 more wireless adapters.
EDIT: I am running it on channel 11 (I read it doesnt interfere with cordless phones) and with WPA encryption. Do these affect anything?
EDIT 2: I just moved the router a bit (it was very close to a speaker before) and now I get about 16Mbps. I was hoping to get up to at least 20-25Mbps. I shouldn't need much more for streaming HD content.
