How much will this help?

i have an emachines 3120 with

Sempron 3100+
512 DDR400 Ram (actually 384 because of integrated graphics)
100 GB HD
Geforce 6100 integrated graphics

i am gonna add a 256mb stick of ddr400 memory tomorrow.
How much of a boost will i get?
will i be able to play call of duty 2? battlefield 2?

how much faster will my comp be in percents?
im thinkin maybe 20%

I don't think it's quite that simple. IIRC, it's pretty much a waste to add a chip that doesn't match (ie. 2x512 of the same brand/speeds).

It might help (depending on the background processes) but I wouldn't even try BF2 honestly, CoD2 would probably be pushing it for integrated graphics as well. Odds are definitely better for you though than if you had some integrated intel crap.

Best way to know how much of a boost you get is to just do it. I personally wouldn't spend any money on that computer but if you have the RAM already no harm in sticking it in there.

o crap!

so im gonna a 512 one instead???????

if i add 256 ram, will there be any increase????

so i have to go dual-channel?

i have a hynix 512 ram stick now so do i have to stick with hynix or is any brand ok???

You'd probably not notice much of a difference, if any. Is the mobo a dual channel memory chipset, I can't remember if the GF 6100 was dual channel or not. If it is, adding a 256MB stick would actually slow the system down because you'd force it to run in single channel mode.

You are very wrong ;-)

To the OP:

I find that BF2 runs poorly with less than 1 GB of RAM, but you should be able to run it. I would estimate that you would get about 35% performance boost depending on application.

With only 384 MB of RAM, the Dual/single channel is not very important, as the system will often wait for the disk cache anyway.

Since you're new to Anandtech, I'll cut you a little slack, but you need to learn to do some searching on your own. Google is your friend.

THIS SITE has a nice spread of games along with the System Requirements for each. Just click and learn. 🙂

You won't get too much help if you treat people that way.

Personally, if you are going to be playing something like BF2, I think you should get a 512 chip instead of 256 and a dedicated graphics card, at least a 6200. In my SFF custom build so I could try to do a LAN party, I put an AMD Mobile 2500+ socket A with 1gb ram and a 6200 and it would run BF2 32 people servers w/ decent settings and get pretty good frame rates (didn't run fraps, but no stuttering). I got my 6200 for about $40 if I remember correctly.
