Let me preface this by saying that if this has already been answered somewhere I'm sorry, but I missed it.

Anyway, I've decided that dual core just don't cut it for my encoding rig and I was wondering if I should pick up a quad core now or if prices are expected to fall precipitously in the next couple of month. Anyone have any projections?

im going to take a bet and say that this will drop the price of the 9650 to about where the i7 920 is. an i7 rig will still cost a lot more though, with the current price for a 3chan 6gb kit going for $300 on newegg, and the motherboards expected to be 3-400 when they show up in retail. if you do enough encoding though you could probably benefit from having 2 rigs enough to drop the dough for a rig like this.

It really depends. If Deneb is competitive, then I would expect prices to drop rather quickly. If it is not very competitive, then the price drop should be much slower.

edit: I misread the question, I am sorry. I also expect a minor price drop in Yorkfield processors, just do to the inherent lower demand with a better processor available. I don't expect huge price drops though, unless Deneb is good enough that it is a viable alternative.

I would say minimally at first. After the channels start to flood with easily available i7's, then 775 gear will fall in price.
