Also, any recommendations on brands would be helpful

Costco sells a tool set with impact gun, grinder, ratchet, and blower for $100. they also have decent compressors for about $200. i think that's a pretty decent deal..

go get a craftsman compressor. find one of the matco/mac/whatever runs around near you tools trucks, and buy the gun from them, along with the tool set

youll also need a tool set, quality is key on this stuff, get metric, and american.

for the compressor its not bad...the tools in the kits are sub par though. i bought a similar kit off of ebay for 100 and they are good for light use. if you plan to use it hard and often, a good wrench could cost you up to 200.

very important advice... never skip on oil on any of the tools!!! always oil them before and after uses. compressed air will destroy the tool if their is no oil in the tool or air.

What are you trying to do?

Generally auto work. Not too heavy. Just working on my daily driver and my soon to be purchased (hopefully) project car.

Go to sears and get a all in one kit. It will have a 5-6Hp comp. and some basic air tools. Nothing fancy but enough to tool around with.
Prices go from $260-$340 for something that will do what you want. DON'T get a mini tank or anything less then 5hp.

Sears about every other week has a Comp. kit for the high $200's so look for that. Comp will have between 27-33gallons.

If you plan to do any heavy work with the compressor: sandblasting, spraypainting, air powered sanders, you want to look a cfm, rather than psi. Last time I looked, all the compressors had the psi in big numbers on them, but that number is really almost useless.

90lbs is enough to do just about anything. Get as many cubic feet per minute as you can afford.

One tip for the compressor, by a small compressor and a large tank. I never did understand why a lot of light user buy a big compressor with a medium/small tank. Small compressor with large tank if more ecnomical, but will only work if you don't need it for hours on end. Charging tires, tightening bolts, etc. it'll be fine.

I do alot of car work and have yet to own an impact wrench, but a compressor and some air tools will be my next big tool purchase. You can find a decent home setup for $100-200 sometimes, the compressor is the harder to find used. I have several hundred tools, maybe 1000 even. My policy is buy them as I need them now or use the AutoZone free tool borrowing program especially for the larger tools that would take up too much room for the once every 100k mile job.

If you don't have a complete set of sockets (air tools should use impact sockets and that is another large expense), torque wrenches and all the other tools do that first, the price of an impact and compressor is several handtools.

If this is something you are going to use a lot get a good one. I bought oil less craftsman 30 gallon 5hp model and it works pretty good. I think it runs around 6 scfm at 90psi which is decent. I just wish I had spent a little more and got an oiled one since they are a hell of a lot quieter. It came with a 3/8s impact wrench and ratchet and the impact is pretty much worthless. I think its only good to around 70ft-lbs. http://www.harborfreight.com/ has some pretty good prices on things. A lot of their stuff is made in china junk but they do have some good brands and for some things the china stuff isn't bad.

BTW if you want to look at their compressors you have to do a search for them. I don't know why but they aren't listed under air tools or anything else as far as I can tell.
