How much was Freon 12 in 1983?

Exactly two decades ago.

It's about $75 a pound at to have it filled at Jiffy Lube :brokenheart:

To get an idea of what it means in today's price, how much is 1984 $1 worth in today's dollars after the inflation?

you dont need to know the exact number to know that the price is way out of whack.

I'll give you a little insider tip if you have the stuff and knowledge to fill it yourself.

Propane.

It is compatable with the oil, pressure, and thermal transfer is a hair better. It can't explode, and the only side effect is a leak is flammable, but with the two or three pounds in the system it isn't enough anyway to do anything, even if all of it shot out at once. R12 is actually more dangerous.

just my two cents. its what I use in R12 systems if the cost isn't worth it. BTW, it only works with R12 systems, and not R22 or variants.

Just have a good (emphasis on good) r134a conversion done. If you need a refill, its probably gonna' leak out by next year anyway unless you're replacing hoses and things too.

I guess I'm Nobody then?

Same here. My 93 Dakota's A/C is still cold, but I'm sure that I'll have to do some work to it eventually.

I agree, but depending on your definition of good, it could get very expensive. I did a conversion on our 1988 Plymouth Reliant with my Dad in about 1996. We bought a rebuilt compressor, expansion valve, and accumulator (drier), and rebuilt the system. Dad had the hoses rebuilt. We did everything ourselves other than rebuild the hoses and have a vacuum drawn on the system. That system lasted about four years, but R134 is cheap and available so we just refilled it and it was fine when we sold it this year. Rebuilding can be very expensive especially if you have someone do it for you. (~$700)

The conversion kit cost depends on car...to convert my dad's Accord it was under $50 I think, cheaper than the lb or 2 of freon it would have cost to fill it.

The propane thing - dont know of any, might check Google for that

Its just not worth it to do a true 134 coversion. It will never be as cold as the R12 it was originally designed for. I'm sticking with R12 for my current car (91 Accord).
