How much to tip?

I forgot my laptop computer in a Miami hotel when I checked out. The housekeeping staff found it in the room and sent it to lost and found. The concierge, upon my request, packed up the laptop and its briefcase and shipped it to me using my FedEx account. I would like to send him a tip--he was very courteous, fast, and did a good job in sending the stuff. How much do I mail to him? I'm including a glowing letter of praise also 😀

at LEAST 20 bucks? man, that's a lot... I'd say $20. 20 bucks is a pretty good tip for sure.. it is afterall probably a regular part of his job..

Send something to the housekeeping staff that found it too. Their part was at least as valuable.
I know, but I don't know who to send it to. I did copy the hotel manager praising the housekeepers too. (Although--Is it condescending to praise someone for not being dishonest?)

I think I'll send the concierge (Jose) $30. 1YP

Send them a couple of pizza's at lunch time and that letter. This way everyone who helped can get a bit.

Thats actually a pretty good idea. Since everyone took part in the actual recovery.

I lost my wedding band at LAX, during the security scanning. I guess I left it in one of the bins. A couple months later, when I return to LAX, I stop by the lost and found, not having any hope of finding anything, and they had it!

I didn't give any tips thou. Should have I guess...

I don't think you should have - odds are, the person working L&F didn't even know the person who found your wedding band. Only tip if you've gotten personal service from someone.

The letter to the hotel manager praising the housekeepers is good. You could probably call and ask who specifically found it.

If it's not condescending to praise someone and tip someone for doing his job, albeit very courteously, it's not condescending to praise someone for being honest. If someone returned my wallet with cash still in it, i'd give them a percent of the cash as a tip. If you break it down (which isn't necessary but bear with me) the housekeeping staff are the biggest heroes. They were the only ones with a choice.

The concierge had to give it back to you, and you did pay for the shipping. It cost him a little of his time, but not much else. The housekeeper could have just took the thing and denied seeing it. Honesty is a conscious choice that all of us have at sometime not chosen. The housekeeper chose to sacrifice the financial gain of a laptop in favor of moral integrity. Letting that person know that it was noticed and appreciated will encourage that housekeeper and other ones to continue to make that choice.

You should send something that everyone can split like pizzas or send something to all parties equally. Sending $30 to the concierge and nothing to the housekeeper is not giving credit where it is due. Your main happiness is that you got your laptop back. Simply because he was the one you talked to doesn't mean he had the most to do with it. Instead of shooting the messenger, you're crowning him.

Thanks Moonbeam. Hope that's not reflective of your usual sarcasm and does reflect your real opinion😉

at least $50.

Consider how much it would cost you to replace it if it wasn't found by an honest housekeeper at the motel.

I would tip the one who actually shipped it to you, but at the same time include a little something for the housekeeper who found it!!!!!!!!!!

They will never forget you if you do this!!
