That would depend on their expectation. Are they expecting something big and grand? I spent close to $4k for my mom and she was disappointed it wasn't more.

Oh I missed that I thought you were turning 60. Was trying to picture who I think you look like @60. Maybe take them out to eat at a nice restaurant if they are close

My Dad just turned 80 about 6 months ago. He was just happy that my sisters and I flew in from all over the country and spent the day with him. He couldn’t give a sh!t about a material gift. I gave a 20 minute toast about the man/example he was/is. He still won’t stop thanking me for that even though it was the least that he deserves.

Since I was upgrading my jet I had my old one repainted and reupholstered to something I knew they would like and gave that to them. They loved being able to travel without having to mingle with the regular folk in first class.

Ah, you must have some lovely family memories.
I love my mom. I paid for her vacation trip and gave her $2k for spending money. She thought I was going to give her $5k for spending money. But that was just her having unrealistic expectation. If I thought she really needed $5k, I would've given it to her.

that's probably 10 years down the road
My dad (early 50s) has gotten both knees replaced, as of a few days ago.

You could be next (except he's had knee injuries in the past, avid marathoner/endurance racer, and other factors that probably caused this but let's just disregard all that and say it was because he's becoming old)

oh i don't doubt i'll need either knees or hips replaced. probably hips, because starting at age 30 my hips started almost popping out of the sockets all the time. if i stand up fast there's a good chance it'll start to pop and i have to stop and catch myself so i don't fall over.

Well, don't focus solely on the cost, obviously. Enjoy thinking about it, to begin with. Try to make it something(s) that will be valued, appreciated, enjoyed. Put thought and feeling into it, research if necessary.
