My cousin in Toronto needs a computer desperatly so i'm gonna ship her one. Anyone know how much it will cost from Massachusetts to Toronto? What tax or customs considerations are there? Whop should I use? (UPS? DHL? FedEX?) It will most likely be a small NLX system that weighs less than 20Lbs.

Can't exactly tell you a price, or a shipping method, but do send it as a "gift" so that your 'cuz doesn't have to pay a tax on it.

vi_edit: Gotcha that was one of my concerns. Getting taxed up the wazoo. Any idea how much would the tax be on a $800 system?

I've never shipped a computer up here before but I use to buy a lot of stuff from the states. Not sure how much the shipping will be but I do know that the taxes will be about 14% (7% GST & whatever % PST there is [the PST was just added to promote shopping at home]). Also if you ship by courier you will be charged a $20 to $35 'Brokerage' fee (to process the item through Customs). If you ship by US post the brokerage fee is $5.

The 'gift' idea only works for gifts under $40. I think the your cousins best bet is to try to find a copy of 'The Computer Paper' in Toronto (website at www.canadacomputes.com). This is a free paper that is published ever month with local computer shops advertising.

Yep, it's definately cheaper to buy in Canada, but it shouldn't cost you more than $30 or so USD to ship to Canada... not sure about the duty though... :(
