i am be no means a guitar expert, but i downloaded this cool program that tuned my guitar. it used the mic input on my laptop to check the frequency and had a meter that told me when the string was in tune. not sure how this compares to other methods of tuning.

i just wanted to add i have no idea how to play the guitar, i wanted to learn. my dad no longer plays and i highly doubt he has the ear or the patience to restring the guitar.

on a related note, can anyone say how much a decent set of strings cost? nothing amazing and nothing cheap, i guess. it's for an Alvarez guitar that was $200.

Restringing really isn?t too difficult, you should be able to do it yourself if you had the patience. If you go to a guitar store and buy strings there, I?m sure it won?t be more than a couple bucks to get it restrung. If you are going to be playing, you'd want to have a tuner of your own (so you can tune it later).

As for string prices, it varies. I love Elixir strings, but they are $13 a set. You can def get less costly ones for under $10.

It shouldn't be any more than $10...usually about $6-7...and get someone who knows how to play to tune it for free

If you have a fixed bridge, restringing is cake. If you have a floating tremlo like a Floyd, restrining can take an hour if you don't put something under the bridge to keep it from sinking when you take the strings off. But that's a mistake you only make once. After that, it doesn't take much longer to restring a Floyd than it does to do a fixed bridge.

Don't get me started on the pain involved with changing string gauges on a Floyd....*whimper*

yes, a set of Elixirs where I live is about $13. Of course, I live in rural PA, so YMMV with the price. And Elixirs are "pricey" as well. I'm sure there are more expensive strings, but I just stick with what works.

13$ is expensive.

The electric guitar strings I use are 6$/pack.

I wouldn't spend more than $8 for strings if I were you since you probably won't be able to tell the difference.

Restringing it can be done very easily my loosening the knobs all the way and pulling the old string out. Then just do the inverse of what you just did with the new strings.

Tuning it can be done for about $9000 if you use a grand piano, $20 if you use an electronic tuner, or for free if you have the "ear".

Strings are cheap. I know you can get most decent strings for ~$10 cdn, but I love my Elixirs, and they run about $18 cdn.

Just go down to the guitar shop, buy some strings, ask if the guy can change them for you and let you watch so you learn the proper way.

they arent that expensive.. mine cost 4 for the pack.. but i need to get a different brand (thinner set cause these sound horrid on my acoustic).

Unless the tabs ont he other end of the gutair is as sh*tty as my electric.. you wont have an issue restringing.. my electric (one of them) has a lousy mounting.. i need to change that someday to something with a hole in teh center.
