How much to replace windows?

I realize there are a lot of crappy windows and bad contractors out there, but from what I understand Sears and Loewe's are not that great either. I have a house with single pane sliders and just want some cheap vinyl windows. The interior of the current windows grows mold :( which is muy mal.

I don't plan on spending the rest of my life here, I just want some mid-low grade decent quality windows?

Anybody done this and have suggestions?

Prices can range from $100 to several hundred dollars per double hung window. You should really look more into it or at least consult the Millwork department at any of your big box stores for more information about them and to see where the best price point is for you.

Also, the above price didn't include installation cost, new trim, or any fancy hardware you may want. The average split is 50/50 in materials/labor.

Oh I will, but I've already asked everybody at work, and am just looking for some first-hand experiences.

we just had some pu tin (3 standard size, an one off) it was $300 installed for them. they are double pane double hung with the gas in between.


We also got a back door put in

i paid about $350-400 per window installed. i hired the guy that lowes sends out. i.e. the contractor that lowe's outsources to. that way, you avoid the 10-15% surcharge that lowes gets to keep.

he admitted that he worked for the big box stores for several years, but realized he could do it himself , charge customers a reasonable price, and do a lot more volume.

anyway, i got a quote of about $9K from home depot for windows for my towhouse, LONG windows (which is the biggest ripoff i know), wanted about $12K, and i got this guy (who was recommended by a house flipper i know) to do them all for about $4K total.

there is SO MUCH markup in window installs. you definitely have to shop around.

I paid $4k for 3 slider windows, 1 double hung window, and a 8ft patio door installed. Old aluminum frames were pulled and openings rebuilt. All glass is Low-e3 with argon. When getting quotes for this, I had ranges from 4000 to 9500 for the same product.

I installed about 20 custom replacement windows from Home Depot myself. Each window cost me about $200 on average (double pane, argon gas). The first one took me about 2 hours to figure out how to install but afterwards it took me about 30 minutes a piece to install. I believe both Home Depot and Lowes charge about $150 to install a single window.

We had Simonton vinyl replacement windows installed this past November. WOW! What a difference in the house. No more cold spots by the windows, temps are even through out a room. We got the best glass/spacer package offered, and now, even when it hits 100 outside, you can stand in front of one of the windows, and while you know there's sunlight on you...you don't feel ANY heat from it.
They weren't cheap by any means, (about $9300 for 13 windows and 2 patio sliders) but they're worth every penny IMO.

Be wary of the window installation companies...they're as shady as used car salesmen...they started off with prices of $18K to $22K for ours, and after adding in "whole house discounts, $XYZ per window Thanksgiving discount, etc, all but one was down to the $8000-$9500 range. The other guy stayed at ~$18500. My wife fed him lunch, (nice guy, just overpriced, but he was selling VERY NICE windows) and sent him on his way...

I used harvey windows, very happy, I had one huge picture window, 4 doubles, 4 singles, and french patio door bought and installed for $2200, these are all double pane, low E windows for the cold VT winters. Best bet is to look for private contractors, but for sure get ref's, I had a guy do some small work who was a moron and had to come back 5x to fix screw ups.

If you think windows vary a lot try shopping doors.

You get what you pay for up to a certain point and then name and design become a bigger factor (along with exotic materials).

Sears/Lowes should be fine for the average homeowner...it's an elitest that insists that they need the best windows available when they have the crap house on the block.

First find out the window(s) style and type you want and then shop that.
