How much to repair?

Kinda hard to tell precisely .. But you will need a new Hood, Driver Side Fender and it looks like the Radiaor Core Support has been pushed back a bit .. You can see that by looking at where the drivers side headlamp assembly is at. Now when all the parts are off, you may find the core support is ok & it just looks back on account of the wrinkle of the drivers fender. As to costs, depends on new or used parts, your city / state as costs vary and of course labor. Around here in NJ, I would not expect that to come in under $3000 total parts / labor.

I should mention this car is a lease which will be up in April. I'm guessing that they're going to say that I need all new parts instead of used although I've never dealt with an accident (on a lease or otherwise) before. Finally, the last fun part is the police didn't show up since this happened in the Detroit area (and she didn't even call them) so there's no police report. Does anybody know how to deal with insurance or at least talk to the cops? I'm assuming insurance won't touch it without a police report but I have no idea.

As far as the lease, I don't think they're going to care one way or the other as long as it's fixed.

Only your insurance company can answer whether they needed the police involved. I imagine they did. Living in SE Michigan myself, I can't imagine why they weren't called. No damage to the other car? Other driver didn't want the Police called? I hope at the very least you have the information on the other driver involved. Regardless, your wife is at fault.

I guess your other option is to pay out of pocket and not involve the insurance company at all.

I'm not paying out of pocket for this, I think I'm better off using insurance.

She said the other guy's car wasn't damaged very much, he thought maybe $100 to repair it.

This is bad.
1.) You (nor your wife) can look at a car and tell how much it will cost to fix. (How's the gap between the fenders and doors? Bet ya didn't even look.)
2.) You NEED a police report.

I just went out an looked and the driver's side seems fine but the passenger side looks like the gap is narrower at the top than at the bottom. It may be of note, the air bags did not deploy in the accident. My intent at this point is to wait until I can talk to my insurance agent before talking to the police about it. If we can get by without a ticket, all the better for us.

edit: I looked at my insurance agent's site and it says that while a police report is helpful, it is not required to have a claim covered. That seems like good news.

You won't get a ticket. But if a police report gets filed, it will end up on the drivers DMV License abstract. And of course, insurance companies use that and wether you are at fault to determine when & by how much to raise your rates. On the other hand the other car could claim Hit & Run in which case, you could end up in a peck of trouble. So if you have the other car's info (license plate, driver license, insurance and where / when it happened) I would tell the police just to cover yourself for liability in case the other driver makes a big deal out of it.

i'd guesstimate ~$2000, so if your deductible is high, take one in the chin and save your insurance records.

take it to a regular body shop and see.

You get what you pay for. In the case of the advice on this topic, it's free. The value of the advice is probably not much more than that.

Some of the "legal advice" on this page is questionable at best. Here is some information on what is required at an accident: Findlaw.com

Talk to your insurance agent on Monday. He'll know what to do.

According to that web site, you should have called the police .. see link to your state (Michigan)

http://www.legislature.mi.gov/...-300-1949-VI-ACCIDENTS

But since both drivers left without calling the police, now things get a bit fuzzy as to who is going to claim who left without
waiting for the police. Hopefully, you did at least exhange documents with the other driver.

That's a bummer dude. It looks to me like you're going to need a new front bumper cover, new hood and a new drivers side front quarter panel. And that's just what you can tell from the pics. Looks like the front got mashed in pretty good so there could be some issues with the parts behind the grill such as the radiator support frame like bruceb mentioned. Also in there is the radiator, fans and condenser for the AC with all their associated plumbing. If any of that was damaged it could add to the cost significantly. My guess for cost would be in the $3-4,000 range. But I'm assuming worst case that there's damage to all of the above. Just a guess though.

My wife went in and got a quote for the repairs and it came in at $4,000. The increase to insurance wouldn't be anywhere near that so I'm going to just send it off to them. According to my insurance agent it isn't necessary to have a police report, they just want information on the other driver. I doubt the other driver is going to be too happy about this since he was driving an 80s Pontiac which is unlikely to have collision coverage.
