Very close to purchasing a foreclose house for $18k. The kitchen is very small, and we will need to remove everything and start all over. Here's what will need to be done. Dont forget, we wont be buying the top of the line stuff. Just something nice and cheap.

1 - new gas stove
2 - sink and SOME cabinets
3 - redo the walls (strip wallpaper and put up new paint) and floor

I will take pictures when I can, but my business partner says it can be done for under $4k (for the kitchen). How much for sink and countertop?

Did anyone just redo their kitchen?

not enough variables....who is doing work? the range of amenities and fixtures can range to extremely high dollar. you can do it very cheaply by going to a salvage type place and getting leftovers and out of date stuff for next to nothing

Cabinets are not cheap. $4k will probably not do it IMHO if you want it to look halfway decent.

I was figuring around $20k to do my kitchen. I won't have to worry about that for a few years though.

Sink and countertop can run as little as a couple hundred bucks, depending on quality, quantity, and assuming you do it all yourself. Make some measurements and hit Lowe's/Home Depot and make yourself up a pricelist. Don't forget to add a bit for unexpected supply needs.

exactly what we are going to do. Yea, we will be doing the work ourselves.
We just need to get maybe 3-4 cabinets and a sink and countertop.
Then the stove. When I say small, I mean the kitchen is very small. It's a two bedroom house.
If I had to guess, when you walk into the kitchen it's about 15 feet wide and 5 feet going the other way. You can't really fit much into this kitchen.

$18K here to do ours.
Nothing OVERLY fancy but lotsa work for sure.
Complete gutting of a 60yr old kitchen. New cabinets all around, new laminate floor (into adjoining bathroom too) new sink countertops, fixtures, some dry wall work, new tile back spalsh etc etc.

I wanted to do it myself but with 2 little ones my wife wouldnt let me as it would take me months to do what they did in 2 weeks.

It wasnt cheap thats for sure and I wish I could have done it myself, but the wife had spoken :)

Tell me what cabinets you'll need and what size countertop. When I worked at Menards I used to design and sell kitchens. A lot of the people were renters that just wanted something cheap enough to look good and last a few years - projects similar to yours. Doing all the labor themselves (it's really easy) I could usually get them out the door for <$1500 -- cabinets + countertop + sink. Then figure in your flooring.

Only 3-4 cabinets? What kind of flooring are you going to do - cheap laminate? Sounds like you could easily do the ENTIRE kitchen for under $1500 worth of supplies.

You can get cabinets (we got low-end solid maple at Lowe's) for around a thousand bucks, give or take, and a counter for around a hundred, give or take. Flooring done yourself, figure 2-3 bucks/sq ft for lower end flooring (like tile, self-stick vinyl tile, sheet vinyl.) I don't know on stoves, hit sears.com or something for an estimate. Walls, if your walls are drywall, get a paper tiger and some good primer and semigloss, gloss, or at least eggshell paint. One gallon would probably do it in a small room. If you get deeply colored paint, tint the primer, you'll save yourself at least one coat of paint that way. Get the deepest double sink you can find, and a decent mid range pull-out faucet (60-100 buck range for faucet.)

My parrents are looking at spending about 40k to redo our kitchen/dinning room later this summer, but we need all new cabinets, fixtures, stove, dw, oven, fridge...etc. The price will range depending on exactly what you are going to do/materials. Kitchens are expensive to remodel though because of the appliences and cabinets.

I'm having 5K worth of Sile Stone put in my kitchen next week. Sile Stone is every bit as gorgeous as granite but is more durable. It would cost a lot more than that, but we are doing part of the work and saving about 1K. I just can't figure out why an under-the-counter sink has to cost twice as much as an over the counter sink. Bah. But, it's worth it... under the counter is much easier to keep clean.

My husband is refinishing the oak cabinets. Only costs involved with that is the stain, and I have to be very, very worshipful of him every time he emerges from the garage with another door sanded.

Something to think about: The money you put into the kitchen and the baths are the most important... nothing else matters as much when it comes to resale value.

my parents redid the entire kitchen, but they put in nice tile, marble countertops, redid all the cabinets (not just refacing, but the structure also and made one of the cabinets smaller so there's more room in the kitchen), new sink, new stove, and put in a bay window in the kitchen window.

it took them forever apparently (i'm not living at home right now, so i got updates through my sister) especially with waiting for the special order sink (it was one of those recessed ones i think?) to come in. then my parents got the idea of putting in hardwood floors downstairs and that added on to all the time. the price was more than a couple of thousand for sure though. my parents are regulars at their local home depot now. hehe.

Sink, countertop, stove, etc are just items you can price out anywhere. The cabinets depend on what you have for a layout and the main cost is if you are having someone do all the work for you or not. It could range anywhere from $1k to $15k depending on what you do.

I'd call a couple local remodelling places and have them come out and give you a free estimate once you purchase the place.

I'm in the middle of redoing our kitchen! The major expense is going to be the counter tops. I'm going with stone and having someone else do it. These only so much I can do. All our cabinets I am refinishing so I'm saving quite a bunch of money there. All the walls are being painted so the cost is only paint, no biggie.

I had to redo the ceiling though and that was a major PITA! It was a drop ceiling and the only reason for a drp ceiling was the original owner thought the real ceiling was ....... get this..... too high! I ended up redoing the electrical for can lights and a hanging kitchen table light. Unfortunately since the drop ceiling was put in, the original ceiling was in ruins and I ended up hanging new drywall. Ugh!

The floor right now is linolium and is going to stay until I can afford something else. The stove is electric but the wife wants gas. Even though I have gas in the house, she wants a professional stove. That has to wait as well. $4000 for a stove is going to hurt.

Here is some pics...

That sounds more like it.
The kitchen is the most expensive room in the house.

Obviously, if you've read all the posts above, the costs vary widely.
My understanding is that 50% *or more* of the cost of having it professionally remodelled is for the labor. While I've seen Home Depot and Lowes mentioned above, I do know that a lot of smaller places have much nicer cabinets for less money (at least around here - I could get custom built solid oak cabinets for a fraction of what HD wants.)

We just remodeled our kitchen, but didn't think it was worth it to replace the cabinets. We did replace the sink, got rid of the golden maple hardwood floors in favor of a quality urethane floor, redid the walls, and the countertops. Excluding appliances, we spent well under $1000 to complete the job (ourselves) The countertops are white tile with blue accents, as well as the backsplash and wrapping around to the wall behind the stove. We even framed in the window with the same type of tile, and it turned out quite nice. (one of these days I have to get my coping saw out of the garage and finish the last piece of trim.)

as jadinolf said, "the kitchen is the most expensive room in the house" - I hear that statement a lot and think, "well, duhhh." That should be obvious since other than the bathroom, the kitchen is the only room with stuff added to it. (sink, cabinets, countertop, plumbing, more electrical circuits than any other room, etc.)

The only thing you didn't mention which I'd recommend is that if the kitchen is so small, you can make it seem larger with the addition of a bay or garden window. Also, lighter colors will make it seem larger, thus plain cabinets painted white shouldn't be out of the question in favor of fancier (and more expensive) oak cabinets.

I'm in the process of re-doing the kitchen.

My kitchen is about 11'x14'.

I got American Woodmark Cabinets from Home Depot... I think the Cabinets ran me about 3200. The Granite countertop was about 3000 as well.

I haven't installed them yet, but I was toying with the idea of switching to Silestone countertop. However, I recently re-visted HomeDepot, and I have to say that I'm not sure I like the "texture" on the silestone. When the light catches it, it looks like a flaked lizard skin (even though it's smooth to the touch) where as the Granite is glossy with no "skin" look to it.

I have heard conflicting reports of having to seal granite countertops because they are somewhat porous. Some people say you have to do it every 6 months/1 year. I have to wonder how easily the Granite discolors (especially with a dark countertop). I can't really see the countertop getting funny looking because I spilled olive oil or something on it. I dunno.

I got a drop in sink that cost about 300 bucks as well.

The new dishwasher was about 500, and so was the microwave (over the stove range). the stove was existing, but they can run anywhere from 300 bucks to 1300 bucks for a good one.

So, for new cabinets, countertop, sink, dishwaser, and microwave, I spent about 7500. I'm installing all of this myself, so it helps to keep the price down!

Hope this helps!

My parents just spend $30k completely remodeling their kitchen this summer. It makes me cringe, but damn if the new one doesn't make the old look like crap.

edit: It cost them so much because they had the lenolium (sp?) floor replaced professionally with hardwood, bought all new cabinets and doors, new plumbing because the sink+dishwasher moved across the room, some new electrical routes, and they tore through 2 walls. One is to the dining room which will now have sliding glass doors, and the other is to the outside, so they had to replace doorframes, etc hehe.

I'll go along with DougK62. Buy it all at Home Depot or Lowes. The cabinets look fine, but you have to assemble them. Countertops are dirt cheap if you don't special order. For what you're doing, $4,000 would be way more than enough.

I thought this thread topic was "How much to redo a kitten?" That's a weird thought.

I spent $35K on a kitchen/dining room.

But, I turned three rooms into one big room. Spent $12K just on Kraftmaid cabinets at home depot. It's kinda t-shaped 24' X 22'

Guy who delivered them said it was the second biggest order he ever delivered.
