How much to rebuild a '90 Honda CRX 1.5 engine?

Would it be cheaper to get my engine rebuilt or to just find a nice D16a1 or D16a and dropping that in? I have really high miles now and my car idles a little to loudly. Also it takes long to turn over and I've had some problems with it. So what would be cheaper and how much and how long would it take to rebuild. :)

An overhaul may or may not solve any of these problems. Dont be too quick to dig into the internals of a motor without specific reason.

I left my car idling and it gets really noisy. Like it's breaking apart from the inside out. I mean I know next to nothing about engines. I mean I know specs and sh*t but not enough to get down and dirty. Would a tune-up help? Or would a new engine be just fine?

I was thinking a tune-up or check-up would help. But I don't have time to take it to a shop. :(

Your Honda has solid lifters that probably need adjusting. It's not too difficult to do yourself (buy a book), and it's not extremely expensive to have a dealer/Honda mechanic do either, I'd guess around $100. That should quiet down the idle. Your cranking problem might be caused by a failing igniter, which is basically the internal electronic sensor in the distributor that tells it when to fire. Does it ever fail to start when the engine is hot? It's a very common failure on this engine. That part is also about $100 at the dealer. Because it's such a common failure, I wouldn't recommend trying to find a used part.

Good luck with the CRX. :)

P.S. From your description of the noise, maybe you should have the oil pressure tested also, just to be sure.

It's a project car. Which means A LOT of work to do. I've done a lot on it so far. I have to redo the brakes soon. :( New rotor's and break pads shouldn't be that expensive. :)

Why even look at a D16? Not worth the time or money (Unless you're that pressed..) Head into the B16/18s instead.

Not really pressed. D16's in a CRX are pretty damn good. It'll get me into the 14's with minor bolt-on's. Also B16's aren't really that great engines, the VTEC isn't that great. I'd rather get a B18B and pop that bad boy in. :D

if you are going to go with a D16A1, get a ZC instead. it is the same engine but puts out about 130 hp.
But I agree with most everyone else about doing the B18 integra swap. pretty expensive thought

If I wanted a Integra sway I would get a B18B. But I don't really want one now. I just want a new engine for now. An Integra swap will come just as soon as all the body work is done on my car. So this will be temporary.

Isn't a B16A or B16C one of the best 4-cyl engines Honda makes? I heard those things can get 160hp easy?

<< Japanese motors are available thru several US resellers. You should look into a full replacement used motor. >>

Stupid comment of the day. :(

Yah, B16's are good engine's, but I'd prefer a non-VTEC engine. If I do go VTEC it'll be a B18C. :D

Just wondering, why don't you want VTEC? I'd think that would be a must?? VTEC would work with supercharger/turbo/NOS so you got nothing to worry about?

Just curious that's all.
