How much to pay movers to move apartment (ballpark)?

StageLeft

No Lifer
If we are moving next week it will be around 10 miles or so and I'm trying to gauge whether I should move the apartment ourselves with a uhaul (actually uhaul sucks so not that company) or pay somebody. Instead of having people come over and wasting their time on free quotes can anybody here, based on recent experiences, guess how much it would cost for a small truck load worth of stuff to be shipped 10 miles? I'm talking couch, bed, maybe a dozen large boxes, etc. We are two flights of stairs up too 🙂 The rest we were gonna move ourselves.

Do places like two men and a truck charge by the hour? I don't see it would take two guys more than 3 hours total to do the move.

i've heard that ppl in moving companies get paid in the neighborhod of $10 an hour. this was like 4 years ago... so i have no idea what it's like currently.

$10/hr?! No way... i worked for a moving company a few years ago, and we were getting paid about $10/hr.. and there were at least 2 of us with each move. I never got to see how much the people actually paid, but i would say probably like $50/hr. But then this is all a guess.

Probably right. I did hear that somebody found a place that charged her $50/hour and it was for two movers and a truck but that was in Canada.

It is a LOT of money. We wanted to move about the same amount of stuff about 10 miles and they wanted over $200. Just do it yourself.

A buddy and I helped our cook move into a new apartment which was just down the street. We moved everything by hand, though. She paid us each $100. This took all day, too.

That's an absolute bargain. For $200 you should have jumped at it. Without the piano it's usually around $400 for a 2bedroom apartment here and $500 - $600 with a piano.

i meant the ppl... not the company.

This is what friends (and beer/pizza) are for Skoorb. Get on the phone and start calling in favors. That's what I've done in the past. It is way cheaper than getting involved with any kind of moving company. Either that or go down to the local Home Depot and hire some illegals for $10/hr.

Not gonna get any illegals cause this couch of ours is truly sinful in how hard it is on the stairs and I don't want it thrown off the edge with a shrug from an illegal 🙂

Calling in favors is what I'm gonna do if I think the cost is too high. I figure a 24 of anyone's favorite beer plus pizza for the first 4 volunteers will probably do me well. Everyone I know loves beer 😀

I'd say it would take about 4hrs. You would be suprised at how long it takes to move stuff out. Then in to the truck then in to the house again. Also they have to go down two flights of stairs. Not an easy task for a bed!

I would just do it with a bunch of friends. I know thats what I'm going to do when I clear this room up to make space for my own study/computer area😀

If I show up you're going to need a whole lot more than a 24!😀

Seriously, though, if I lived anywhere near I would volunteer to help. I would go the friends route if possible.

We had two reasons to not get it.
1.) I was moving onto a first floor apt... no big deal. I got a friend to help me out... I didn't have anything heavy, just awkward sized couches.
2.) We rented a Uhaul type truck... In one day, we moved myself, my aunt, and my aunt and uncle. We saved a ton of money by moving it ourselves.

It wasn't as hard as we thought it would be.

Skoorb, did you two purchase a house? or are you moving to another apartment?

if u hire movers that are licensed, u can check their DOT number for their record (safety, complaints) by calling 888 368-7238 for dept of transportation, motor carrier safety division (thats the direct #, i think) or safersys.org

Rates vary by region - here it is about 75-100 per hour with usually a 3 or 4 hour minimum. For your requirements I would estimate you will be covered by the minimum. But get written quotes - or you'll see hidden charges appear on the final bill.

Don''t forget the tip for the guys who do the actual move.
