I am about to hit the 8 K mile on my 2004 Ninja 500. When I went for a oil change, the mechanic said that it is now due for a 8k mile service , which is going to cost about $450 for that and another $100 for both the tires. Is this the right price. I got this motorcycle about 18 months ago and I love it. Got it used, but I do not have the service guide

Is there a website where I can find the service / overhaul timings for motrycles. Also the lst of stuff to be changed at each service interval?

Thanks much

You can find information about your motorcycle from the Kawasaki website here. Spending ~$150 on the 3 manual sets seems like money well spent if you intend to do maintenance and repairs on your bike yourself. Sounds to me like it will pay for itself just for you doing this service routine. If you don't want to spend that kind of money you could always hit up ebay, but I couldn't really find the manual dated later than 2002, and there's no guarantee you'll get the proper manuals or manuals that haven't been beat to hell and back.

I had an '04 EX500R, and all it requires is typical bike maintenance.

What are they doing for $450?

If they are doing the 7500 mile, then it is a good price IF they do everything including pulling the valve cover to check clearances, and drilling the metal caps on the carbs to adjust/sync them.

I say "if", because most shops will skip the more labor intensive items if the bike is running fine.

Wow that is a great link. Thanks so much. I am not sure what they are going to do. I will check with them.

I dont have a place to do any work on the bike myself. I usually take the bike eveyr 5 months or so for a oil change, I typically drive around 200-300 miles on the 500 and another 200 miles on the zx10.

Also anyone know any decent mechanics whose prices are reasonable in the cupertino, mountain view , south bay area?

For that price, I'd just keep riding it. On the ninja 650 motor you basically ride it till 12,000 miles then adjust the vavles. I'm going to assume the 500 is similar?

$450 for the service and another $100 for tires?

My '08 SV650 is coming up on the 8,000 mile service and that consists of basically an oil change...which will cost me about $125 at the dealer and about $20 if I do it myself. Tires would cost me $250 minimum not including mounting and balancing.

That's cheap for tires. I had $150 in tires (got them really cheap) and another $90 for installation. Tires normally run ~$150 for the rear and ~$100 for the front.
