sorry if this is the wrong forum....
Mods, please feel free to relocate the post.

i do PC maintenance, webdesign and other techie tasks for a guy at $40/hr. now he wants to learn computer basics (ie, how to write/open/save documents, browse the web, send/receive emails, file/folder management, etc).

how much should i charge him for in-home classes? his place is 1hr away from mine by train. i have to establish a 2hr minimum fee, otherwise i'll spend more time on the trains.

How much does the travel cost you overall? At $40/hr, 2hr minimum + travel time, you'll get $160. Was that worth your 4 hours? Now, let's say you're done in an hour, with a 2hr minimum + travel you're still walking away with the same amount. I'd say if $160 covers what you think you're worth call it good. If not, raise the rate. Or if you don't want to travel tell the person to learn how to use it them self. Everyone else has.

the travel would cost me very little. about $10 total.
i wont charge him for the time i spend on the train.
i was considering $150 for a 2-hr class. a friend of mine thinks it's too much.... i dont wanna charge less then $100 for the 2 hours.

If you could do it online, you could give him a price break, and still make the money you need. i don't think $150 is bad for 4 hours(what you're spending total).

i cant give it online coz the guy cant even maximize/minimize/restore windows. even in person it will be difficult. the thing is i already do work for him sporadically and i charge him $40/hr. i dont wanna charge that little coz he's too technically-challenged....i know i'll get stressed. 🙂

What to charge?
Depends...
How much would your therapist cost, after the frustrations in teaching
a newbie the pc ropes?
Tried to teach my 70 year old father once, for a few painful hours.
He never did understand you do not hold the mouse button down while
moving the mouse. Never got past the first simple lesson. Gave up. Started drinking.

I had a friend who was an airline pilot and a former B52 bomber pilot. Like your father, he could barely handle a mouse.

His wife was a stripper, who was much better at handling a PC.
