How much time to allow for getting a tux for prom?

My date has bought her dress already, and I still have to get my tux. The prom is on May 19 (The release date of the last Star Wars!). I am planning on getting fitted for one. Do people usually rent it or buy it? I think I will rent it since I will hardly ever need it again. If I rent it, do I get one the same day? If I buy one do I have to wait awhile to get one custom fitted? Thanks!

Rent. Go about a week before to get fitted so they can order one if they need to.

Rent, don't buy. By the time you come even close to wearing it enough for buying it to break even, it'll be WAY out of style.

Go in now if you want a nice tux. Often it takes a month to get ready (they order them from other locations). If you wait until the last minute, you get stuck with the leftover tuxes that no one else wants.

Prom >>>>>>>>> Star Wars. You can see a movie any day of your life. The typical ATOT poster will only get one chance with a woman.

Go in and rent it now, they will need to measure you and reserve the tux. Bring your date or a piece of fabric from her dress to match your tie and vest or whatever.

The last tux I rented was for a wedding and cost about $100 so be prepared to spend a few bucks

This is true. Go ASAP and get yourself fitted. Take your date with you to ensure a good match to her dress.

Rent. Mine is tomorrow and I placed the order this past Monday and got exactly what I wanted. I think I was lucky, though. Probably should have done at least 10 days in advance ...

I'd say the same - go and rent it now. You can opt for matching the vest/tie, but it isn't necessary. If you are not going to match the colors, go with a neutral color (black/gray/etc).

Last year, I wasn't planning on going to my prom, but some people wanted me to go at the last minute. Rented a tux with no problems a week before the event.
