How much thermal paste to use ?

Hi all, I purchased a Thermalright XP-90. My cpu is a A64 3500+. Now its been a LONG time since ive used ANY thing other than what comes on the stock AMD sinks.

I now have Arctic Silver 5. Can someone tell me how to properly apply this to my cpu ?

Thanks in advance.

John

The AS5 instructions are a bit much IMO. I've never seen a reason to apply to heatsink base then scrape off with a razor. I just wrap my finger in plastic wrap, apply a bead of AS5 to cpu, then smooth it out with finger.

What I do is add a little bit and spread it. If it's not enough, add a little more. You only need enough to barely cover the heatspreader, so a very thin layer will do.

Have you ever frosted a cake? Its just like that. Make sure to be very generous with the paste, you should use about 1/4 to 1/2 of the AS5 tube.

Seriously...please don't put misleading information out like that...and if you insist, please put a note that you are joking other than the little 😛

I take a small piece of paper (something the size of a PostIt), fold it up till its sufficiently stiff. Clean the CPU and HSF surfaces with IPA, wait for it to evaporate, put a small gob of paste on the CPU and spread it out with the folded paper. Aim for about the thickness of a piece of paper. Done 🙂
