How much supply do I need for an a64 3400+

I'm building an athlon 64 3400+ system:Athlon 64 3400+ socket 754 cpu, DFI lanparty UT nF3 250GB MoBo, Seagate Barracuda HDD, etc.
And I intend to play with overclocking.

Most of the case/supply combos I see have a 300W supply. Am I wrong or is that inadequate?
I know the total wattage alone is not enough info for selecting a power supply. So...
Does this cpu draw from the 12V rail?
If so, how much current does it draw? The AMD datasheets are very unclear on this.
And BTW, since the core voltage is 1.5V, why would any cpu maker draw from the 12V rail? All that step down means power lost, doesn't it?

Any other suggestions for a reasonably priced case/power supply combo are welcome.
Thanks.

Antec makes a lot of combos with 350W plus power supplies. A couple to look at would be the SLK3700AMB or Sonata. There are other Antec's to look at as well and you can't go wrong looking at any of them.

That 100 watt peak number was made with dual-cores a great amount of headroom in mind. You will never push the Athlon 64 3400+ anywhere near 100W.

300 watts is enough as long as it?s a quality PSU, most stock PSU?s found in cases are junk. The only cases I?ll leave the PSU in are Antecs and InWins (Forton), which happen to be the only cases I buy with PSUs.

Nope, that peak 100 watts is courtesy of the S754 Athlon64 3400+ as reported by THG in an older PSU roundup.

That's why nowadays, its imperative to get a PSU with a robust amperage rating on the 12V rail(s), at least to supply enough juice to the CPU,

and especially if used in conjunction with a high end graphics cards, such as the GeForce 6800 Ultra.
