I tried installing linux on a 2.1 gig partition I already had. It didn't install on that partition though instead it choose another partition to my dismay and was in access of 2.1 gigs when I was done. It would not boot up though so I just deleted the files and will have another go at it.

So how much space will I need to install Linux ???

BTW: on disc it is only 453 MB

it all depends on the options you choose. i have a system that is ~75mb fully installed and in use, but its just a firewall. it can take up to the amount of disk space you give it too.

Depends if you choose a workstation, server, or custom installation.

Your avarge RedHat install probabaly takes up in the range of 600-900 MB.
But that includes lots of programs, such as Gimp(Photoshop like prgram), compilers, editors, etc etc.

Well, it all depends on what you install, my normal RedHat6 installation usually takes around 700MB...and this with a lot of apps....

Just out of curiosity, that partition you had was it a linux ext2 partition?? Did you select it
during the install process??

Which distribution are you trying to install??

See, that's why I like Debian: it's SO MUCH easier to get a REAL minimal install and then just add in what you need. Granted you have to know what you need, but if you're an experienced Linux user/admin that's easy. :)

Damaged - I didn't mention it, but the 75mb and almost all my smaller installs are Debian. of course most of those are on t1/dsl connects so apt-get is a really nice option there.

It is Corel Linux 1.2 but I think something is wrong with it because the installation setup looks weird. It is distorted some on my monitor. It seems it is either corrupt or not compatible with my monitor. I'm going to try agian with an older hard drive I have. I will remove the one I have and test it on a 2.1 gig old hard drive.
