How much space do I need for a typical receiver?

I'm looking to order a half way decent TV stand as part of a larger set. I want to make sure though that the shelves will be large enough to accommodate a home theater receiver. I don't have one at the moment but intend to purchase one in the near future.

Can anyone tell me what are the typical dimensions that I would need? I can get the dimensions for examples off of Amazon but I'd like to be sure, especially with the amount of clearance I would need for cables. I'm worried because the furniture examples I have are 17.5" deep while the receivers I see on Amazon are 17" deep. I can get the stands made deeper as it's made to order.

id get at least 20 inches, 2 feet is better
HDMI cables will stick out 2-3 inches before you can start to bend them

Sigh. Odd, the TV stands that I see on Best Buy are the same nominal depth but I guess they get away with it since they are open backed where as the ones that I am looking at are closed in the back so you lose an inch or two.

yea thats most likely why, i actually just measured my AVR and its only 15 for the chassis, the speaker connectors stick out another inch or so , you could prob get away with a 18 inches if the AVR was small enough but seeing as you are going to have a closed back i would err on the side of caution

they do make angled HDMI adapters that can shorten the distance they stick out of the back by making them go Up/down or right/left

just google for them

That's an idea. But I was already thinking on getting another inch of depth and I think I may have been misreading the dimensions on Amazon. Best Buy explicitly states which measurement is the height, width and depth and it seems I was mixing the width and depth. So that gives another two inches usually.

So I think 3.5" should be good clearance. Now I just need to figure out what height I want the stand to be for a 55" TV. The one I like is 30" but I think that may be too high.

you generally want your eyes to be around center, measure eye level when sitting on your sofa or whatever and go from there. mines around 30 + the TV stand height, not ideal but it is what is it

Yeah. I just measured it out in my living room and I think that extra 6" can be annoying with that large of a screen. Too bad, I liked the TV stand and it was all of a set with the rest of the living room set. I'll have to see what I can find i the 24" range.

Just a heads up; some AVRs don't like the closed in shelves due to a lack of airflow for cooling.

You could drill/cut the back or add an external fan.

AC/DC converter with silent 4" PC cooling fans. Works awesome.

Receivers need a few inches on top for cooling. A tall receiver might be 8" unless you go very expensive. So, 10" is safe for height. Depths are all over the place. The only standard is width.
