How much software/apps do you buy or do you just use the free versions of software/apps ?

I try to stick to open source as best as I can. Though sometimes I feel I make my life harder since in lot of cases the commercial applications are just so much more user friendly and easier to use. On the other hand any time I find myself on a Windows machine I am reminded of why I switched to Linux, it has it's annoying quircks too. Especially the newer versions like 8 and 10. Switching to Linux is probably how I managed to keep my hair red and not turn gray.

Microsoft isin't evil, they just make really crappy operating systems.

Most of my software is open source, outside of a handful of expensive tools I need where the free versions aren't as good or don't exist.

Virtually 100% of the software I use is libre, and I donate money to projects/services I like. I try to spread the money around, and tend to target smaller projects.

For apps, it's usually the free version unless there's something I want/need in the paid version.

Outside of a couple games a year and tax software I don't buy much of anything.

I use the trial version when available first and pay for it later, if I find it useful for it's intended purpose. Work place provides MS Office ($9.99 for personal use)) and customized apps.
LibreOffice is already installed in all the computers.

Windows, Office, Adobe Suite, and a few games. Other than that I don't buy anything.

I don't use a TON of software but I try to do open source if it's available.

- PDF viewer: FoxIt Reader (free)
- Image editor: Photoshop (I found a disc in the lake)
- Development: LINQPad (bought this years ago, in like 2007, and the small fee was way worth it. Handy tool)
- Misc: UltraEdit (I've pirated this before but realized that's dumb so I bought it a couple years ago; again great tool and not that expensive in the scheme of things). Came with a compare tool too which is awesome. I'm used to BeyondCompare at work though which is just fantastic, though I think the UltraCompare one is pretty similar.

That's about it. I use several development softwares but they're free now (thankfully Visual Studio is, I love you Microsoft). Unity game development software is free for personal use too.

I get dirt cheap MS products through my employer. So technically I've paid for Office and Win 7 licenses but they were dirt cheap ($10 each). Other than that, a couple games on the Play app store. No other major software purchases for me.

Just games, pretty much. For everything else there always seems to be a free version that does what I need (unless it's for work, in which case work pays for it). I did buy Giffing Tool last year.

Pretty much just console games are the only pieces of software I purchase. All of the applications I use on a computer is open source or freeware or comes with the operating system.

I think the last piece of software I purchased was Xee for OSX like 3 years ago. It was like $4 or something.

Depends on what it is, but I try to pay for it if I feel it's worth it. Games are a given and I still buy those relatively regularly, but my most recent large purchase was for licenses for Addictive Drums 2 when they went on sale. I've been moving towards e-drums and they seemed like the best software for the price. Pretty pricey but it's one of my few hobbies anymore.

I might end up buying TH3 software for the guitar soon too. I've trialed a few different amp modeling software and this one sounds good and the interface is pretty good as well. Again... pretty pricey.

Steam games (mostly VR, which tend to be pricey).

A select few iOS apps (Todoist Premium, for example).

Various video editing packages (NLE's, plugins, and supporting packages).

Never bought any apps (by "apps" I mean phone/tablet apps). I often think about buying the full ASoftMurmur app for my phone/tablet, but the free version is good enough for me. I do wish I had the crickets sound, though, but I could just open the web version for all of the sounds.

I never buy software anymore unless it's a PC game on Steam.

I go with free software, unless it's a pc game, or the OS.

I have paid <$5 for the odd Android app now and then.

Oh yeah, I did pay for WinDVD back in the day ... and more recently Filter Forge 6, for some reason (both for PC).

I haven't bought anything lately other than MS Office (stupid cheap through employee program) and games. I buy software if I use it a lot, I just haven't picked up anything new in awhile.
