this is a link to a cached job description for an edge manager at Savvis..

I have the following certs

A+
Network+
Server+
Security+
iNet+
MCP 2000 - Win2k Pro admin (210)
MCP 2000 - Win2k Server admin (210)
MCP 2000 - Active Directory (217)
MCP 2000 - Network Admin (218)
MCSA 2000
CIW-A

How much should I ask for? How much should I expect? My brother, who works at Savvis, says the edge managers are very well paid. He makes about $35k annually doing front line tech support... His manager told me edge managers make over $10k more per year than tech support....

edit: i'm hoping to clear $4k per month after taxes... I usually pay out about 20% gross income to the tax gods..

Siunce they are asking for a year of experience I would imagine the job pays between 35-50K depending on location. Where is the job, and what is normal rent in that area? If your in BFE and an apt. costs $400 a month to rent then your probably not gonna make 4K per month before taxes.

you have no unix background. they will not pay you a premium, because you do not have the desired requirements.

well I have plenty of experience... about 3 years working at about the most elite webhosting company on the planet.. clients included gateway, the entire government of pakistan, associated press... I was an account manager / edge manager... while I didnt physically trouble shoot servers or equipment, it was my job to make sure it got done...

cool thing is, if I want certs, they pay for it.. several retakes too before they give up on me passing.. and they pay for local college too..
average aptment is about $600-$800 in the area.. for a one bedroom not in the slums but in the nicer burbs, inwhich the business is located... so in the immediate area, aptmnts are about $800....

most of my clients at my last job were unix based... while I wasnt at the console everyday, i know how to get around, can read a man page, and I had to deal with tech support on unix related issues... ive setup iptables before, but have never recompiled a kernal... ive installed linux and freebsd before..

I have no certs (other than useless A+) and I don't feel I could ever make that much doing this work.

compiling a kernel really isn't that complex

/usr/src/linux
make menuconfig

select options
make modules; make modules_install
make bzImage

done

im sure its simple once I get used to it.. and thats what I told them... im afraid of nothing, i just need a chance to learn.. if Im left to myself to learn, it will take longer than if you have someone to hold my hand and show me the "best practice" rather than making me read about it......

You might price yourself out of a job if you say you want to clear $4k/mo when negotiating $$$ for this job. If you're single and have no kids, you'd need to be making ~66k/yr to clear 4k/mo. I don't know if you actually put 4 lines on your resume with that MCP stuff, but you got the exam number wrong for win2k server (it should be 70-215).

(btw i passed active directory with a 700 .... ) so i wouldnt say i was proficient with it, id say "im proficient in windows 2000 operating systems, windows 2000 networking, and im lucky with Active directory...

Additional experience isn't always a good thing b/c not all jobs want ppl. with too much experience because they know they can pay a lot less to a less experienced guy who learns fast.
