Hi guys, just wondering how much I should tip the cleaning maids in hotel? What about those guys who bought me to my room, do they deserve a tip?

Should there be any difference if I stay at holiday inn or four seasons?

Depends on what level of hotel I'm staying at, but at low-mid range hotels I leave maybe $3/day, and mid-upper places I leave $5/day.

I used to consult and travel for work 100% of the time, I'm Diamond/Plat, etc on a bunch of hotel rewards programs and I have never tipped the maids at a regular/non-resort hotel. I'm a heavy tipper at restaurants and such so it's not like I have anything against tipping but I don't see the need at a hotel. I'll tip the room service guy or the people bringing your bags up at a nice hotel but that's about it. Maybe if you have a party and trash the room I would leave something but I don't see a need to tip a few dollars if they just make the bed and drop off fresh towels.

For those who do leave money, do you put a note or something? If I were the maid and saw a few dollars sitting on the table, no way i'd take it for fear of them saying I stole it.

Some hotels have exceptional service and I could understand it. However, most nice hotels compensate their staff. When you compare this to the restaurant industry, servers DEPEND on tips for income. You're justified in leaving nothing for hotel staff.

Many hotels have a small sign stating who cleaned the room the previous day and telling you to call the front desk if you need additional towels, etc. There is a folded pocket on the inside or on the back to place any tips to avoid any confusion.

Personally, the only tip I give to the maids is leaving any beers I didn't drink in the mini fridge. :-X

I leave it on the bed with a note saying thanks.

Apparently I'm a bit of a weirdo though, judging by everyone else's responses.

For service beyone just straightening up and towels, I will leave about $5. Usually there is a sign indicting the name of the person.

My wife is much more generous when we stay at a place longer (weeks+).
After about a month, there will be service fighting to assist. Usually she hands a gift+ $20+ to those providing the service.

Nothing at all should ever be tipped to these people.

You would agree if you ever saw how they "clean" your room.

Leave some money on the dresser and pop out the closet screaming 'thief!' when I see them taking it.

Don't tip them. Let them raise their kids on the $3 an hour they make. Stupid cleaning people.

I do know someone works similar job at a high end hotel with union and he's making 40K for doing an easy job.

What I would like to know is that if this is a custom or not. I had heard stories like if you don't tip they are not gonna change your towel, and last time when I stayed at a pretty nice hotel in SF, the first day I didn't tip and the second day I saw a hand written card from the maid singing praise as how lucky she was to serve me...

I usually tip $1-2 a day. If I don't have singles on me that day, then it's $0. I'll usually tip them a little bit more if I have any requests (i.e. more coat hangers, more towels, etc) just to make sure the job gets done.

I think this is the video OdiN is talking about.

If you used a room only for one night for just to sleep in private (instead of at the airport, for example) = $0

If you needed the maid to come in and cover up a crime scene and dispose of a dead hooker = $500 (for example)
