How much should I spend on a new gaming rig?

I am going to build a new gaming pc for myself and I would say my budget is between $600 and $1,000, although I would prefer to keep the cost closer to $600. I am not a super hardcore gamer but I do play video games and appreciate good graphics. I want to build something that will last me several years and be able to play future games with more advanced graphics. I would also want to be able to replace my graphics card in the future without have to buy additional components (CPU, etc.). I do not need top of the line but I do want to futureproof my computer within my budget.

I was also want to be able to rip my blu collection that I own and covert to a smaller file size to watch on my pc.

What do you all recommend? Are there specific components that you would recommend?

As far as I can tell, AMD seems to give the most bang for the buck?

I would agree that this is more general hardware, but I think $600 is a little anemic as far as OP.

I would say that is good for the core items, like CPU, HD, Mobo, but need another $200 for your video card.
