How much should I expect to pay for mount and balance tires?

One guy in Sudbury, MA quoted me $78 USD to mount and balance four tires (that I might buy from Tirerack).

Is that the normal price? For some reason I thought it would be around $20 USD to mount and balance all four tires.

Is it the same price in your area?

I wouldn't know. I'm not for MA myself, just visiting here for two weeks. Do palces like Walmart install tires?
 
The guy might jus be trying to rip you off, have u got qoutes from other places, u know u don;t want to pay too much, sounds like a commerical for that insurance company, can;t remember the name right now

Noise is generally more of a function of tread design than tire construction. Also, after-purchase siping is generally a rip-off because any decent tire is already designed with a tread pattern that will evacuate water or hold snow. Siping increases squirm in the treadblocks, increasing heat generation and decreasing stability on good (dry) pavement. The increased heat will also take a toll on treadlife, speed rating, and load capacity.

Some might goof on me...but I've had good luck so far. I take mine to Walmart to have it done. $10 a tire and includes lifetime rotating and balancing. I have it done every 7,500 miles...

Tire noise is very much a part of construction. Have you ridden on bias ply tires? Bias Ply tires are normally much louder and more prone to getting flat spots than radials. Siping is almost a requirement for hardcore mud tires since otherwise any type of inclement weather driving would be insane.

What kind of car do you have? I cringe at the thought of walmart changing my tires...just imagining the scrapes on my wheel.
 
The thing is I'm planning on buying my tires from TireRack.com and then shipping it to my uncle's place here in MA. By doing that I'm saving over a $150 CDN compared to buying tires in Canada and installing them there.

However, I don't want to pay $78USD to install. I wonder if Costco installs tires that you don't buy from them? Same with Wal Mart or any other store? I went to a independent tireshop and they want $35 PER TIRE for installaion if you don't buy the tires from them.

Does anyone in the Boston area know of a place that mounts tires for cheap?

Well the thing is, I don't know who to call. I checked out whatever tire store that I found in my travelling in the area, and they were a) rude & arrogant b) very expensive. One guy said that he arbirtarly sets the price according to the size of tire (even know he uses the same machine for all tires) and because I won't buy tire from him he'll charge me double!
