How much should I boast on my resume?

Martin

Lifer
I want to sound neither cocky nor dumb, so I'm having trouble choosing my words.

For example, I know a bit of ASP and PHP (for ASP I've read a book or two, written some simple pages) so I think I should put down "basic" or "rudimentary knowledge of web development", but it sounds kinda negative.

Or for java...I've taken plenty of courses and its the language I know best, but I don't want to put something like "substantial" or "extensive knowledge..."

I know there's some ppl here that hire, so I'd appreciate it if you guys can tell me what you like seeing on a resume. Or anyone else with a helpful hint or two....

I should note that I'm applying for coop/internship positions. Being in CompEng, the poeple I'll be competing against in EE and CS.

😕

Never mind, I just found the invoice on the counter beside the garbage can, it was only $1.25.

Continue blowing your money on crap!

"some work with ASP, PHP" might be safe. Or if listing language-by-language, something like "Some ASP, PHP." Since it's for an internship they'll know you have a little experience but nothing major.

For java, have you done any large class projects? any group projects? Since it's your strong point you should probably go into more detail, for example:

"class work and several projects including data plotting tool, image manipulation program, feline defenestration automation control"

When you have a draft, put up your resume somewhere with contact information removed, and let us take a look at it.

For what it's worth, I feel that phrases like "rudimentary knowledge of web development" don't sound at all negative. More like honest, or maybe subtly confident in your potential, if it adds up with your other attributes.
