How much should a full time IT person make at a Small Business?

Right now im a Help Desk technician, but I have some people wanting to hire me full time at another small business. Im making $13.50 an hour here (plus insurance/paid holidays/and they put in a bit for retirement as long as im putting back), so how much should I ask for to work full time being an IT person doing everything for 15 computers and web design and updates??

SIGH ... hopefully its more than what I make. I administer 10 servers and do desktop support for a small school with 70+ faculty members.

I make $28k a year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Mind you all the stuff I've implemented and save them from having to go buy software.

Whoa dude....now thats being underpaid!

With IT it's hard to pinpoint a salary.

You have to look at the skillset needed, what you are really doing daily, the amount of money your support leverages in production and the amount of money it would cost if you were not there.....etc.

In some places an admin for 50 machines making $60k a year is grossly overpaid and others an admin for 2 machines making $100k is grossly underpaid.

This would be from good ole 8-5. So only at the hours they operate with maybe a time or two after hours to do major updates to the server, there is only one that they have. Soon, maybe two. One for file sharing and their program, another for the Web. 😀

no one hiring! grrrrr 🙁

Need more specifics to make educated guess. Mainly depends on the type of business, size, and how much they rely on IT to run the company. Know people in the $50k range and others in the $90k range.

Helpdesk here starts at 35k - You have to learn how to work the phone systems, write up a ticket and transfer it to 2nd level.

2nd level desktop support starts at $40k - You have to learn how to reject tickets from the helpdesk and make them troubleshoot issues before sending tickets to 2nd level. 😀

My job deals with server/LAN support and it starts at 50k.

Right now im tier 3 support. I take calls....install systems, rip them apart to troubleshoot. Everything pretty much.

Also...Lillicam. Is that your hosting company? Maybe I can get them to check that out instead of getting a separate web server.

Yea - that would be nice. Let me know!

it all depends on a few things... how cheap the company is, how fast the pace of business is, how reliant the company is on IT, and of course your own skillset and experience level.

the first being easy to figure out, most companys these days will try to nickel and dime you down to minimum wage. the second, is more or less the stress factor. Third, if a company only uses computers to send email and browse the web, chances are they wont pay you too much. but now say the company has 20 servers and if one of them goes down, business productivity slows by 15%, then they would probaly pay more... this ties closely in with my last point - your own skillset. if youre an admin thats slick enough to keep all your systems going, integrate tech according to business models, maintain a secure/redundant infrastructure, blah blah blah, then you probaly have valuable skills and lots of experience... that stuff doesnt come cheap.

in your case, i think the salary varies alot. im sure you can google lots of salary reviews or check out some of the salary calculating sites like salarywizard.com.

when i worked as an IT doing support and website stuff i started off at $15 an hour and was making close to 20 before I quit. This was around 4 years ago.

I make a "spectacular" $12 an hour being a windows/linux systems administrator and help desk.

I call it exploitation of student labor.

i make 19k part-time doing IT work at a small business.. 4 people in the office and 10 outside field salesmen.

i also have to do other things like accounts payable and presentations, reports, etc

im still in college btw
