How much SDRAM for XP?

:disgust:Yet another upgrade looming! I currently have 192mb SDRAM with Windows Me. When I upgrade to XP, can I stick with 192, or should I add another 256? It's so cheap right now I figure I should bite the bullet. I think I'll install XP as a Xmas present to myself...

Well the official minimum spec is "64 megs but 128 is recommended" - I would think that 192 is fine but like you say, spending another $30 for 256 megs somehow still seems impossible...how low can it go?

Im running 256 now in XP, and its running fine.

I do plan however to pickup 256 or 512 more megs soon, since ram is so cheap now.

I believe it was C|Net that posted an article saying that they would reccomend a minimum of 192megs ram, with 64 additional megabytes per user that would login to the computer.. IE, for three users, 192mb + (64x3) = 384.

Im running it right now with 256mb ram, and 5 users.. Runs fine..

I would say 192mb ram would suffice, but with prices so low, why not go grab a 256 stick.. or if you can find one, a 512 😉

I think what the CNet is referring to is to use the "quick user switching" or whatever they call it you will need additional RAM per user "switch". Otherwise I don't see why you will need additional RAM for additional accounts.

XP boots up with a footprint of about 100MB untweaked. So it leaves you 92MB to play with guess that should be enough if you don't do any memory intensive stuff.

I'm running XP with 256MB but find I acctually bottom out now and again! I guess I'm use to having 512MB on my system before I installed XP,..either that or it's a hog?

Heh.. 64 to 128.. You'd better be running a 1.5 P4 or Tbird with that amount of RAM. I have 320 mb's and it's not enough for my Celeron 900. I'm going to add another 256 and see what happens.
